    I remember my first family road trip: we packed up the car and headed north from our home in Rhode Island to Acadia National Park in Maine.  We kids were so bedazzled, we all decided we would one day go back to Acadia again.  Since then, I have crisscrossed the United States time and time again, seen many places -- and my old desire to see Acadia again no longer seems that important.  I don't know if I will bother.


    Likewise, my first trip outside the United States: I went with a college course to Costa Rica, to the spectacular Monteverde Biological Station -- hence away from the tourist zoo at the Monteverde Reserve.  I reveled in the tropical splendor, a dream come true.  Since then, I have been to various tropical rain forests in various countries, and the dream-come-true that was Monteverde has receded to the back of my mind.  Will I ever feel the desire to go back?


    I wonder, therefore: how often do people chose their "favorite" place because it was their first travel experience?  When I read about, say, a former Peace Corps volunteer who soon goes back and builds a life in the same country where she served, I wonder if perhaps it was just that the novelty of her first overseas experience so bedazzled her, she mistook that for a calling.


    The more traveling I do, the less bedazzled I am by any particular place.  I realize more and more that there really are no wondrous, amazing places; they are all just places, with good points and bad points and people just trying to live their lives.  I suppose that eventually, it will get to the point that one of two things will happen: either I will settle down somewhere, satisfied, and stop traveling; or, like an addict who needs more and more substance to get less and less high, I will just keep traveling, getting more and more jaded, the rest of my life.  I am interested in comparing the thoughts of GeckoGo members who are already seasoned travelers compared with those who are just starting out as travelers, or maybe are still dreaming of their first big trip.
