ps. Durban is great but not the safest city at night so... rather take a taxi to get from one place to another and try to avoid to use a creditcard (don't know if this is common but I used it twice, in a busstation and in a wonderful chinese restaurant and I had a hard time getting the hundreds of euros back that were spent in a bike shop just by using an empty imprint of my Visa-card there..)

it's not too hard to bargain about everywhere in South Africa to rent a room for a couple of months time for a (very) reasonable price.. Especially in low season you can definately even try the backpackers in Durban. When you arrive in low season and have a good connection with the owners they will probably even find a way to let you stay in high season or help you to another room. There are always seasonal jobs as well to find in whatever bar or restaurant or backpacker in South Africa. Ask and you will get!
