You will love Fiji . I can recommend Batiluva Resort. It is a small resort which is still a bit of a secret. Its run by two Americans Sharon Todd and Dan Thorn. It is a short boat trip out from Pacific Harbor. It is a beautiful peaceful island. It attracts a lot of surfers as they have exclusive rights to Frigates Pass(a famous surf break) but you can also relaxe, snorkel, dive and do your own thing. Around 175.00 Fijian dollars a night includes everything (Meals and accommodation). Sharon is a great cook. You can spend time with the real Fijians in the one village on the island and learn their customs, history etc. Try the Kava. Bula.

I would recommend a day trip to Malamala Island - very relaxing, snorkling from the beach, lunch & breakast included. There are plenty of resorts that offer cheap accommodation and most have a dive facility (ie Octopus Resort)

Octopus Resort in the Yasawas was amazing. Very Friendly and not too expensive. Great Snorkelling off the beach. Dive set up right there.

Treasure island is awesome! South sea island is great for the price because if you go there for a day trip you get unlimited beer, great lunch, and it has the best snorkeling and diving ive ever done. Remove

You've probably made up your mind by now. I didn't do the Yasawas because my priority was diving, but that seems to be the most popular choice. The beaches do sound wonderful and the diving sounds ok. If you're trying to not spend a ton of money on flights off of Viti Levu, diving the Bligh Waters off of Rakiraki can be world-class. There are several backpackerish places on the tiny, palmy island of Nananu-i-ra--Betham's, MacDonald's, a few others. A couple of years ago I paid about $35 or $40 US a night at Macdonalds for a perfectly nice little cottage, and they also had a dorm if you're trying to be shoestring. I dove with Kai Viti Divers--they're based out of the resort across the way and they were very good. I loved Levuka on Ovalalu (not beachy, just old South Seas and very sleepy, except for the tuna factory) even though it rained every single day, and there is a dive shop that can potentially get you to exciting sites, but when I was there the cyclone winds were kicking and the boat was too small to go far in rougher seas. I loved the Royal Levuka Hotel and it was cheap, but if you're creeped out by rooms that look like they haven't been redone since 1935, it might not be for you. I even liked Suva--I was there a couple weeks before the last coup, so there was a little extra crackle in the air.

Fiji is amazing and the people are the friendliest I have met anywhere. My advice is head East, away from the international airport in Nadi and you will find people are much more authentic and the prices drop substantially. Taveuni is beautiful, but more touristy than Vanua Levu. I would leave Viti Levu as soon as possible and head East or to the islands. Another thing, expect everything to be on 'island time' besides flights, so don't plan your holiday/vacation too tightly. Also, try to learn a little Fijian (Bula and Vinaka, at least) and talk to the locals--they are the experts on where to go and how to get there, so make sure you talk to them. Some travelers overlook the people and head for 'tropical paradise' and thereby miss everything and pay a fortune. Best wishes!

Fiji is awesome. I recommend getting a "Bula pass" and travelling the Yasawa island chain. My friend and I did this for 10 days and had an amazing experience. You can pick your accomodation, prebook it or do it as you go.....easiest route is booking in advance or else you have to do it on the boat on the way to your next stop. They werent the most organized so make sure u keep all your receipts!!! It was an awesome way to get around though! One ohtel/hostel you should stay at is Orsman resort....insanley beautiful beaches, really nice accomodation, and big buffet meals!
