Not been to Cape Town or J'burg but have family near Durban. When we visited them and stayed in a gated, alarmed villa, we were still burgled. SA is a beautiful country but do not wear expensive jewellery etc or you will make yourself vulnerable. Thieves stole trainers and mobiles from us. Enjoy SA and make sure you go on safari!

We had a great experience with Green Rhino tours. They were able to arrange our entire self-drive South Africa tour. www.greenrhino.co.za

Yes it turned out that we rented a car with a GPS. It was a great experience to be able to drive from Cape Town to Stellenbosch, where the wine estate offering an unforgettable memory to all of us. After then spending two night, we drove back to Cape Town, the Kalk Bay and also visiting some of the great sites such as Simon's Town, Cape Point. Thumb up for the Kalky's ultra fresh grilled fish head!

If you hire a gps when you hire your car you shouldn't have a problem - ask the locals at your hotel if the area you are planning to visit is safe and avoid getting out of your car on lonely /deserted roads. Be very careful after dark. Cape town is much nicer than JHB.

Same as Brook, I rented a car and drove the whole area myself going down the penninsula. Great fun! I'd never been there before but it wasn't too hard to figure out.

I actually did Cape Town on my own. Just rented a car. It was fairly easy and I felt very safe. Joburg might be a different story.

Renting a car is fine. They wouldn't bother steeling a shitty little rental car.

would not recomend to trvel by car in SA if you have not aany experience. 1. it´s very dangerus and second, the will steal your car faster than you can look.
