Oh, if you're in Tuscany, you MUST visit Florence, Lucca, San Gimignano, Montereggioni and perhaps Pisa also. Pisa is actually quite a dump, in my opinion, but of course it has many attractions, so it is worth a visit. Siena also is lovely.

I think the best is to find a place to stay in Arezzo. There is the highway near, so if you rent a car, you have Siena, Florence, all center of Italy ant your "wheels". If you travel by train, in two hours you can reach Rome at south, and Bologna at north. All other cities are at less time.

Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, Arezzo are a must. The best is to be based either in an agriturismo or in a small town, rent a car and travel in the countryside which is especially beautiful in this season.

Lucca is a beautiful city, too. It's Puccini's hometown. And it's not so crowded with turists as Florence, Pisa and Siena...
San Gimiano is a beautiful spot, too - in September not sooo full of turists any longer.
My best-loved place is the Abbazia di San Galgano which I discovered this year... Go there just before sunset and get a wonderful Tuscany feeling...

There is a lovely road from Colle di Val D'Elsa to Cecina on the coast. It's a typical italian road with a lot to see: San Gimignano (very lovely town), Volterra (town on a hill, with a wonderful view; Volterra is the capital of Alabaster, a special stone from this region) and there are a lot of farms , where they produce olive oil. But also Florence is wonderful and interesting! A tip for swimming and sunbathing: Isle of Elba, you can go there by car (by ferry) or on a special ferry for pedestrians. Enjoy your trip!

Start at Siena, imperative place to be. Then go to San Gimignano, little town but whith a lot of history. Then go to florence slowly, don't hesitate to stop at some of the little town on the "road of wines".

yeah don't hesitate to take a ride to Siena too, it's a beautiful place and you can also visit lots of old villages nearby, landscapes are wonderful. Cities like Arezzo can be interesting too, and you might wanna see the hot spring at Bagno Vignoni( don't forget your swimsuit )
Anyway wish you'll enjoy it ^__^

florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. don't take a map, just walk the streets and find all the cool places hidden away - you've got to to go up the top of the duomo coz the view is incredible, try and get into the boboli gardens and eat and drink as much of the local food and wine you can get your hands on!then of course you've got to see Michelangelo's David and there's heaps of incredible art galleries hidden away that are great to see.
