Hawaii Questions

Question asked in : Hawaii - 3 years ago

Anybody got ANY idea of what is best to do in Hawaii? I know about the beaches, and the volcanoes. But I need specifics. Also, I need little tid-bits of information of good locations of hotels, things to beware of, and good places to eat. Especially, budget ideas

If possible get to Kona, Big Island. Then take a walk down Alii Drive. Ocean front road leading past a couple historic buildings. More importantly, the place was dominated by locals when we were there and they were incredibly friendly. Also, try to get to Hawaii Volcano National Park. It's absolutely worth the trip.

i've only been to O'ahu. Waikiki is just a city with a beach, but if thats where ur staying, u can get a 4-day bus pass for $20 at any ABC Store. beautiful places to see are Makapu'u Beach (theres a lighthouse there u can hike to), Nu'uanu Lookout, Waimea Bay Beach (for some big ass waves if ur going in winter) and Waimea Falls across the street, U can hike Diamond Head Crater for $1, Ka'a'awa Valley, Mokoli'i Island, Hanauma Bya for snorkeling, and of course Pearl Harbor.

If you're on the Big Island, I hope you're staying North of Hualalai. If so, Ruth's Chris Steak house is super tasty, but not easy on the wallet. Pesto Cafe is value priced and delicious. If you want to splurge and go deep sea fishing, check out Guy Terwillerger and the Ho'okele at Honokohau Harbor. Guy has been fishing the deep blue for years and will not dis-appoint.

If you're staying at Oahu forget about Honolulu or Waikiki - it's far too busy and there are so much more nicer places to go! If you're there on a budget - there's the polynesian backpacker hostel near the Waikiki Zoo (if you want to stay in Waikiki) - it's not too bad, but if you intend to book a private room - they are only semi-private and you have to share a bathroom with the dorm people.. a better place to go is the "Backpacker" north shore - i've been there in winter, you can guess that there was happening a lot - i've no idea what it's like in summer...

It all depends on what island you're going to. For Oahu, the Waikiki area is very active- street musicians, restaurants, luaus and shopping galore. There's the Honolulu Zoo and a rotating-top restaurant. The Moana Surfrider is an absolutely wonderful hotel, but it's pricey, but I still highly recommend it, it's well worth the money- it's an enchanting hotel. Also, Nu'uanu Pali State Park has some of the strongest winds of any mountain top I've ever been on. (and watch for the Jungle Fowl in the parking lot!) The winds are absolutely insane, it makes for quite a rush. Enjoy Hawaii! Also, let me add that Waikiki and Honolulu are way better than they are given credit for- busy, yes, but if you have the right situation, it's actually exciting. The people you'll be around are tourists, but 95% of the time, they're nice people. Don't overlook them just because a few people that prefer rural areas are telling you not to.

When you are in Honolulu, go to Paradise Cove Luau. We had the best time of the whole time we were in Hawaii. Great food and great cultural show.

As some already said, if you have a choice, don't go to Honolulu or Wikiki, it isn't worth it. Maui or Hawai'i (the big island) is much more pleasent and not at all toristy.. - have a nice trip and don't forget sun-screen!

On Oahu, you definitely should see North Shore, if you're intersted in seeing some skilled surfers. I stayed at Sharks Cove Hostel (www.sharkscoverentals.com), excellent value for money.

what island will you be hitting? I suggest Kuaia, hands down. Much more remote and less touristy. You could probably camp there, which is as budget as budget gets.
