I lived in Romania. If you have plenty of time to visit the country you could start with Cluj, you can go in the city center to see the Catholic cathedral, also the protestant cathedral form Kogalniceanu street, it has a collection of family crests and if you are lucky enough you can assist to an organ concert. Also in Cluj you can visit the Botanic Garden, which is the biggest in Eastern Europe. After that you can visit Sighisoara, Sibiu, Brasov, Cheile ceahlaului, Cheile Bicazului, The Moldavian Monastries, you can also go in the center part of Transilvania and you can find out about the Hungarian and Szekely culture, you can visit Sovata with a lot of nice lakes, one of the lake is so salted that you can float on the wather without swiming. Also in Harghita and Covasna region you can see a lot of nice mountains. Forgot to mention that near Cluj, inTurda there is a salt cave that rematined there after taking the salt out, you can visit it and if you have astmathic problems you can stay there longer and you can pla daily visits. Also near Oradea is Baile Felix very famous for their thermal baths, every year a lot of german turist are visiting Baile Felix (since more than 20-30 years ago). In Bihor county you can find also Pestera Ursilor wich is a nice cavern. If you travel by car between Oradea and Cluj you can find a lot of countrymans selling their handmade products, but take care sometimes you can find fake things.. always look for an label with made in china :))).

I've been to Budapest, the Parliament is a must see place, lovely cuises on the Danube Delta, which divides Buda from Pest, the two parts of the city. Romania is a wonderful country, must see places: mountains and seaside, medieval castles, I'm originally from Romania so ask away. Hope this helps and that I can be of help in future xx

Yes I've been. Now if we're comparing capitals, Budapest is hands down far superior to Bucharest visually, architecturally. culturally and most importantly in cleanliness. However, Romania outside of Bucharest has a lot more to offer than the rest of Hungary. The whole area of Transylvania, which includes the mountains and the picturesque and culturally stimulating cities of Sibiu, Brasov (both with designated UNESCO world heritage sites), and Sighisoara, is definitely worth visiting. As is the area of Moldova where you have the famous painted monasteries (another UNESCO World Heritage Site). I would not recommend going to the Romanian coastal cities on the Black Sea as the facilities have gone down in quality while the prices have increased...if you want to spend some time on the Black Sea, go to Bulgaria to places like Varna or Albena - better value for your money.

I live in Romania and been twice in Budapest. Budapest is amazing. Worth every second of walking in the city. Romania is BIG! You really have to choose what you want to do; I'd recommend the mountains with the Peles Castle in Sinaia and the mountain resorts. The Olt Valley is filled wt monasteries (Cozia is worth a visit!).

I haven't been to Romania but I've been to Budapest twice. Budapest is a wonderful city full of beautiful buildings. I would recommend getting on the hop-on, hop-off tour bus to get your bearings when you first get there. It's a relatively cheap place to eat out and go for drinks which is great if you're on a budget. I would also recommend the zoo and the thermal spa on Margit Island as places to visit. Although most inhabitants speak at least a bit of English or German you'll find that people are a lot more friendly and you get much better service if you learn a little bit of the language. Even just enough to say hello, thank you and a drink order!

If you spend some time in Romania try to steer clear of the cities (no offence city folk) Get your butt up to Maramures county and do a bit of agrotourism up there, stay on farms in small villages. Its one of the most beautiful places i have ever seen and the people are really amazing. I heard that there have been some floods lately up there, i hope everyone is doing ok.

Yes. I've been in Romania in the Transylvania region... That is a fantastic medieval culture and fantastic cities and castles... Especially Sinaia, Brasov, Bran (Dracula's Town), Rasnov... I didn't liked Bucharest that much, but it is OK... Just go there, to see the Parliament and that is all.... Greets...

I am living in Budapest. During the spring and summer the city is very nice. U should visit termal baths (but I havent been there), Buda Castle, St Istvan Basilica (go upstairs the view from there is cool!), Margaret Island - there is a nice park. U can buy national hungarian "kolbas" with paprika to feel the taste of Hungary, hope you will like it.
PS Also the museum of haulokost is really good, is you are interested.

I live in Romania and there are a whole bunch of nice places to visit. Especially if you like the mountains. I wouldn't recommend the seaside though. We also have some medieval castles, if you like that kind of things.
(Just for the record, it's not a third world country. Okay, some areas might be poor but most of the cities are in full development. Whoever didn't visit Romania in the past 4 years... well, if you come back you'll be surprised of the changes.)

I lived in Budapest for a year. It's a nice place, though depends what you're looking for. Shopping is expensive compared to other western european countries, bars are cheaper though.

If a person lives in Romania it is so possible that he/she went to Hungary too. :) Especially people from the west side of the Romanian land.

There are two kinds of travelers that visit Budapest- the ones that experience the love at first sight when they see the Parliament and the others that fall in love slowly...but keep the wonderful memories forever.

I already came back from there. I travelled through lots of places in whole Romania and hitch-hiked back to Poland through Hungary, which was rather hard. But I can tell you a lot about Romania, people, food, places worth seeing etc. if you like. Maybe I'll recommend you some places - for sure Rodnei Mountains - so lovely and still wild! Brasov with the Tampa mountain and beautifull landscape from the top. Sighishoara - Dracula house - uuuuaaa;) If you want to go to the seaside Constanta is nice. Don't go to Mangalia unless you've never seen socialistic architecture;) Eufora is perfect for vacation!!! Mamaia - yes, go there if you think that romania is poor country, don't go if you don;t like crowded places. Next tip - Lacul Rosu is shit!!! Targu Mures - so European! What more - people are very friendly and helpful - no worries! Best food: ciorbas and mici ;) Wish you a nice time there. In case of questions ask:D

I did both in one hitchhikingtrip. Budapest is my favorite european city! And Romania is beautiful. Go to Cluj-Napoca and Brasov(it's not a typical romanian city, but I went there to see bears at the edge of the city)!
