Hi! I am Slovenian and I can asure you that u can see a lot of slovenia with just a short car trip. The capital is just an hour and a half car drive. but anyway arround novo mesto i can give u couple of places for family to go. In Sevnica there is every year Knights games for the whole family. Also you can go and see Kostanjevica na Krki which is the smallest city in slovenia (it is allmost like a village on the river) and is one of the nice countryside must see. You can also visit the castle on Otocec (but make sure there is no Rock Otocec festival during that time). You can also go to the thermal spa. There are couple of them around with loads of pools and slides. This is it for now. If i will remember something else will let u know. Cheers
