You don't need to dive, just snorkel. Most of the chiclids stay along the coast of the lake; and please dont disturb their nests on the sandy lake bottom (guarded by the male chiclids). The Nyika Plateau is very nice both for views and for wildlife. As to the lake, ask the locals about crocodiles (especially if you go to Likoma Island) and hippopotamuses; both can be very unfriendly !

Nkhata Bay has the most beautiful spots to dive. Aqua Africa operates there and all around Malawi they operate on PADI. Cape Mclear in the south is also known to be a good spot, however, Balazhia is very infectious there and not in the north in Nkhata Bay. The Malawi Islands has great attractions and good spots for diving too. Happy diving :)

OK...that's better...some pointers. ;) I've done a tour over Malawi for 2 wks (too short but...hope to go back soon) and it's one of the most hospitable countries I've been to. It'is a greatl travel destination. If u r going to the south, u cld visit Liwonde NP; there I can strongly recommend "Chinguni Hills Lodge" (they also hv a camping site and the owner is simply fantastic). Zomba Plateau is also nice to see, very nice views. Do not miss to go swimming/snorkelling in the lake; it looks just like the ocean that big thing with waves and all :)) There r many nice lodges/camps right on the lake's shore...take a pick. Just don't expect to see a lot of game in Malawi ;) ENjoy the country and ppl...and write abt it afterwards. :) Damn...I'm jealous :)) When r u going?

The snorkling was good off the Cape McClear - especially if you get out to the island. My friend and I swam out on our own, but its a little rough.

thanks for your answers... i will fly into Lilongwe, I will stay for 3 weeks. I am not sure were to go though. I know I do not have to expect too much game, but as a biologist I am easily pleased ;o) The lake sounds wunderful and I definitely look up those points of interest you gave me! I am definitely looking forward to my trip!
