most of hotels in venice are not value for money..if you are not hostel fun i advise you to looking for bed & breakfast in Venice beacuse if you stay only 1 day you will not waste time and money getting trai or vaporetto

When I went to Venice I stayed in Mestre, it's much cheaper than Venice and there's a bus every half hour to venice.

Try any hotel in Mestre. It is 10 km away and 1/2 price of Venice. Good public transportation between Mestre and Venice.

Depending on the time of year, the island of Lido has a number of cheap beachfront hotels. Its a popular spring break type destination for college kids. Its close enough to Venice that you can get there by Ferry if you scope out public transport well. Took maybe 30-40 minutes to travel to Venice from Lido. The hotel was dirt cheap, maybe 30 Euros.
