Question asked in : Myanmar (Burma) - 4 years ago

Can anyone update me on the money situation in Myanmar? Is it still best to bring a good deal of cash and then just pay in local currency?

Change your dollars in the main market - the rate is much better than at the hostels / hotels.

You have to have new, un-creased American dollars. They won't accept them if they are faded, creased, torn or otherwise imperfect. There are no credit cards (except a few high end hotels) and no banks. The Burmese are the nicest people in the world, but the money situation can be really frustrating. You can use dollars for most things, but you should get some kyat (you can change money most places) for smaller ticket items.

Take plenty of cash (brand new looking dollars only!) because there no ATM's. You have to pay in dollars for accomodation. maybe for tours and souvenirs. you will use the local money for other expenses. Go to the central market to change money in Yangon. You get the best rates in Yangon of course, but you can always change money at your hotel in most places. This is what I did as you get 100 local notes when you change 100$. Unlike dollars, the local notes are sometimes very bad looking/dirty!! lol I took 1.000$ and only spent half in one month as a budget traveller. Leave your money in your hotel safe. I have never heard of anybody being robbed. On 2 occasions, change fell off my pocket. I didn't notice it and the 5 dollars could have gone a longer way to Burmese people but they just handed me the money!

Just take dollars with you, Euro are known too...important is how you change. Talk to the taxi driver, he will help you. At the beginning change small amounts, don't forget for a burmese 50 dollar is allready quite some money. The burmese itslves when they change the money the are a bit scared too. When you are in Yangoon on the strre in front of the trades hotel you will be asked to change. I avoid those guys. In case you run out of cash go to the travel office you find close to the traders hotel in Yangoon
