There are some inexpensive hotels. I always stayed at the Radison or Hyatt but they are expensive. Be sure to book in advance as the price is always very high for walk-ins

I can suggest the Villa Shams, in the Qurm suburb of Muscat. It's a 9 room villa lead by a german houselady. It's not expensive, and moreover, a car (Mitsubishi or similar) is included in the price! I stayed there 1 week and enjoyed it, villa and car and location and everything

The Hyatt, for sure! It's unique compared to other Hyatt hotels across the world. Another good place would the Shangri-La resort; they actually had to blast a hole through a mountain to make a road that would lead to the hotel. It's a very secluded location. You can look for deals on these hotels online i think, and i'm sure they'll be inexpensive esp. if it's off season. Bustan is another great place.

We stayed in the Al Bustan Palace and it was awesome. We went in early summer and the humidity was high down by the ocean so we ended up driving up into the mountains during the day for dryer air. Several friends told us to stay in Nizwa at the Golden Tulip and save a lot of money and enjoy cooler temps.
