We've been to Hotel Horizonte (***) in Lisbon. It has the basics (shower/bath, airconditioning, TV, radio,...), a service with a smile and a breakfast buffet, which was very good! This hotel is worth her stars.

go to airbnb.com and check out the places on there. You may be able to get a room in someones home and see how the locals live.

I stayed at the Dom Sancho I in the middle of Avenida da Liberdade. It's small, simple, and within walking distance of the main sights (not right around the corner but walkable). It's nothing amazing, but when I went it was the closest, most reasonably priced place available at the time. Maybe worth looking into.

I know just hostel, it is near old town, the river. It's called Travelers House Hostel and it is the best hostel I've ever been. In the common room you can meet a lot of people from the all places in the world. And bedrooms are just beautiful. Well, whole hostel is beautiful.

The Art's Executive and Tryp Oriente are good and close to the city center. But please do try the little hostels in Sintra... you will be amazed!

I was there just last week, enjoyed youth hostel @ Picocas, but had a private room there. Just next to subway. Currently also Accor has a b-day campaign going on, if you enroll their a-club.com with code 2009BirthdayBonus before end of the month, you get 2000p that can be converted to 40€ voucher you could use in one of their hotels, incl Sofitel.

Depends on how much you want to spend =) city center has nice hotels but... most of them are expensive: if you want you can check Bairro Alto Hotel, Chiado Hotel, The Heritage, Robbie Williams likes Avenida Palace ;) There are also a looooot of smaller hotels and hostels in this area. Lie Luanna said, you should have no problem finding one you like... her suggestion is pretty good: near the subway and on the modern side of the city: Parque das Nações.
Have fun! If you have the opportunity, visit Sintra as well

When I stayed in Lisbon, it was usually at Tryp Oriente. It is a little south of the town center, but it is only a block from the subway, making it easy to get all around Lisbon, and also a very quick drive to/from the airport. The staff were always wonderful. If I were going back to Lisbon, this is where I would book. If you want to right in the city center though, I remember hearing good things about The Golden Tulip and The Hotel Dom Carlos Park, but there are a lot of hotels in the city center, so you should have no problem finding one. Have a great trip and visit the oceanarium!
