Mexico is a beautiful country. I am fair and have light brown hair and had no problems I even drove in Mexico. If you're going to travel alone just becareful especially in Juarez or Tijuana they've had a lot of problems with gangs in those cities.

Just so you know that in many countries in Latin America and Mexico there are people who are blond and red hair as well. Not the 20% of the population but there are and they are FROM there!

Ditto what others said. My friend, who is also blonde, studied abroad in several countries in South America and people were fascinated with her hair and the fact that she was pale. They would often try to pet/touch her hair to see what it felt like.

I'm a redhead & I'm fair too and I travelled in Mexico, Guatemala and Panama without any problems. I even got a fair few compliments on my hair colour. If it's a touristy places you're going to, they've probably seen blonde hair before. Even if they stare, they won't be rude/mean/nasty about it.

I´d say it depends on the place in South America, Mexico, ofcourse you can find seedy places everywhere and it´s always good to be careful, but for the most part it should be ok.

I am blond and I was in Ecuador - no problems at all. People seem to be interested... I went to a hardresser in Quito. The haircut was for free and 5 people were around and touched my hair when it was washed. In the end they even took a photo to document that a blond girl had gotten her haircut in their shop!

STAY OUT OF THE BORDER TOWNS....TOO MANY GANG PROBLEMS. aRE YOU A "DITSY" BLOND OR A SMART BLOND? Your demeanor will dictate how the locals treat you...again...stay away from the border towns...really....its dangerous.

I had no problems at all with my hair what gets blonder in the sun. Just be confident, don't behave like a victim and some Spanish help. Sometimes actually people want to do photos with you and touch your light hair cause it is exotic for them. So let them it is like we do photos of them :) Happened to me often in Colombia and Peru.

Of course you will have all the attention of the mexican people, but usually they are so polite, friendly and nice with the tourists visiting their country, it's incredible. Travelling in Mexico is actually safer for foreigners than it is for mexicans because the drug-mafia is not interested in getting the world press-attention after killing a tourist... You just have to be careful not to get robbed. And don't get to flirty with mexicans if you don't like being followed, whistled at and all those things ;-)

If you are driving from Texas into Mexico just be careful in the border towns. Nuevo Laredo is very dangerous of late w/ lots of gang wars. Watch out in Juarez and Matamoros too. Just be aware. Make sure to get insurance. You need some kind of special insurance to drive in Mexico.

The thing is that I was on vacation in Texas and I wanted to drive into Mexico. They seemed to be terrified of me going because I have very long blond hair and look foreign. They thought I would get kidnapped for ransom or robbed. I think Mexico is a beautiful country and I love the ppl and culture..even talk the language.. I will just have to take my chances with the few bad seeds :)
