When I was with a tour group in Paris, we walked up to the base of the Eiffel Tower which is surrounded by them. Our tour guide says "Alright guys I'm going to get your tickets and you don't speak English" and walks off. Seconds later the gypsies were coming up to us asking if we spoke English :)

I avoid them at all costs. They're easy to spot. I usually pretend that I'm ignoring them but really pay attention to them. However, I've been to Rome recently and noticed this time around that they aren't nearly as many.

I've avoided it - one thought is to not make eye contact and walk purposefully. You can be less attractive as a potential victim that way.

Apart from you using the word «gypsy» (which could be related to a few peoples in Europe) which I think may be inappropriate, I did realize someones intention to pickpocket me several different times in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Using reason and certain precautions avoid most cases, i think. M

The number of cases in Italy have fallen so I think the chance of getting pick pocketed are getting slimmer.

Patty, it was more of a yes/no question. I have, in fact avoided being taken by gypsies in Florence and was curious how many others had avoided being robbed.
