I am currently in Madagascar, a country I've wanted to see for a long time. It is a really unique place, a mix (culture, food, nature, wild animals, people) of Asia and Africa and tropical islands...it is woth seeing... Also, if you would like to see the Sahara, Algeria is a good place, specially Tamanrasset and Djanet where there is a stone desert and beautiful landscapes..

Definately visit Swaziland and Lesotho. The mountains in Lesotho are fantastic and Maseru is worth a wee look. In Swaziland go to Mbabane and th Milwane Wildlife area. Great place to eat is eDladleni restaurant on the way to Mbabane. Its not signposted well, but its fantastic to eat in. One of the best meals of my life, no exaggeration.

Ethiopia is definitely unique. One of the most varied countries in the world, if you fly from the north directly to the south, it'll seem you landed on another planet. (The variety doesn't apply to food :)

We did Kenya last year, just the south and really impressed of it. Kisumu, nice local town at Lake Victoria, not so touristic! We did safari in Masai Mara what I surely recommend with a optional day at lake Nakuru. Lake Naivasha is also impressive, nearby you have Hell`s gate that you can visit by bike, and where you have a big chance to spot girafs whilst biking. Nairobe I wasn`t found off. If you go to Tanzania, go also to Zanzibar, Stonetown is a crazy, vivid city! Just get lost in the Stonelabyrint and at night go eat seafood at the local market, where all the chefs will convince you to eat from them! Just amazing!

Go to Sierra Leone where you will find the best beaches in West Africa with very few tourists. The people are very friendly and easy going. Also in West Africa you have Mali with amazing destinations like Mopti and Djenne where you will find impresive banco (mud) mosques and interesting markets.

Just got back from Burundi... amazing place ranging from Rift Valley to rolling mountains. People are very friendly. Not a 'tourist' destination, but if you are wanting to see people and culture... a must.

Your friends didn't like ANY of those completely different countries? Maybe the problem is with your friends and not the places. You mention nothing about your interests, so giving you advice is like shooting in the dark. Just because I loved something doesn't mean you will. My favorites were Tanzania, Egypt, and Ethiopia. But once again, that tells you nothing about what YOU may like.

Ethiopia is an amazing country that offers lots of variety. Culture in the north (Gondar and Lalibela), great nature with the Simien mountains and the Bale mountains. But for me the highlight is definetely the tribal people in the Omo Valley. Another country worth visiting is Sudan. Just loved the desert and the very friendly people. Great country to just go with the flow and enjoy the daily life of the people.

Ethiopia! It's not only in Africa it seems to be on another planet. Landscape, culture, people, food... everything is unique and you won't find/see it somewhere else. Just two hints: churches not build of stone, but carved into the ground. Food that tastes utterly differnent from anything else you have eaten, but trust me delcicious.

Thanks for your help. I missed Kenya here. I have been also. So far Lybia does sound unique; with things to see that cannot be seen anywhere else. One thing; please provide more recommendations; beaches, do not interest, please provide more unique type countries or sites to see. Please rate the top spots in order in each. I am taking notes here to assemble an itinerary, but dont have unlimited time. If there is a lake or some feature to see please state why its different; Cant go to see things that can see in other places. The sites have to be truely unique to the country.

Go to Kenya. Besides all the lovely National Parks they have got Chale Island. It's a private Island next to the border of Tanzania (but it is Kenya) and it is very special: They have extreme tides when there is low tide, you can walk to the mainland without getting wet feet. There are many little pools around the island where you can find all kind of animals from the sea. Half of the island is the hotel and the other half is some kind of conervation area with mangroves.

If we only take the non-dangerous ones... Mali: Bandiagara, Mopti, Jenne, Dogon Country, Timbuktu... Rwanda/Uganda: Gorillas Madagascar Burkina Faso, one of the best even if it could look disappointing at first glance.

Cameroun is a wonderful country. Its also called "little Africa" because you can find all the landscapes there - from the Tchad-Lake to the 4000 years old rainforest!

Lybia is said to have the best sahara desert lanscapes; true to tell I didn't see other north africa desertic area so far so I have no reference. However Lybia is amazing for what the archeological and hystorical heritage is concerned. Go to sabratha and Laptis Magna if you are into this stuff and you will see one of the best archeological place of the mediterranean.

Etiopia - lots of things to see and experience, lots of historical places. But people hard to communicate, so its not an easy region. But worth seeing- the only country in Africa never really conquered by Europeans, with 3000 years long history :)

I've been hearing very cool things about Tripoli, Libya. I'm living in Saudi Arabia right now, and Tripoli is on the top of my list to see. Not many are going right now... so, it's a trip that you can blaze for others- not often we get to do that these days.

I have been to Tunisia. I went via Sfax to to Kerkenna Island. Have you ever thought of going to the Cape Verde Islands? You might like to go to Madagascar to see the lemurs. I have seen a new travel book on Angola advertised.

If you want to relax we must go to Isle of Sal!! While your in Cape Verde, fly over to Dakar in senegal and visit the Rose lake, where the Dakar Rally used and is going to finish. See the fishermans village. Very nice i love it!!

Kenya - know where to go - but best safari trips! Being among 900 elephants in the wild at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro camping is something that I will always be pulled back to do over and over. Zanzibar is also another must visit place for the culture, beauty and smells.

Libya is amazing, not many tourists and the most spectucular Greek, Roman and Punic ruins. Its a very interesting country and specutacular coastline. Lepits Magna, Cyrene is a must, plus there are WW2 battlefields and cemetries. Sudan is a another country that is amazing, the desert is great if you can camp out under the stars, it took us 5 days to cross the desert in 50 deg heat but it was amazing, wadi halfa hasnt changed since michael palins documentry 15 years ago. khartoum has amazing mango juice and the people are so friendly. Ethiopia is different from Southern and Eastern Africa, the dancing is amazing, addis is such a great city. good museums and interesting food, great dancing. Lallibella was amzing. maybe even better than Petra. Dont go in rainy season!!! You havent got Kenya on your list either. i loved Kenya, Lake Naikuru, Lake Naivasha, Masai Mara, Mt Kenya. Learn Swahili and meet the locals is the best way to enjoy Kenya.
