Not far at all from the capital. Really a beautiful place. Be sure to store all your belongings INSIDE your tent at night. We had some bandits steal all the shoes that were left just outside of the tents. They also took our cooking gear, but most importantly... they drank all of our Ayrag!!! GRRR!

It's not so far away from Ulan Bator, so just take the bus (going once or twice per day) - you don't have to book the place - just try to get in :) For the departure time ask in guesthouse.
Tent is essential; you can pitch it almost everywhere you want. There is one river, one small village, where you can find only one, rather poor shop. So I would advise you to buy all the stuff in the capital. You should be also aware that outside the Ulan Bator it's hard to find fruits and vegetables…

Terelj is very close to Ulaan Bataar. There are virtually dozens of ger camps in the area, mostly stuck together, which is probably not very appealing. If you don't mind camping, then it's well worth it as you can then venture further into the park and see it at its best. We did a trip with Nomads which was absolutely brilliant. We stayed in a ger camp far away from all the others deep into the park in an idyllic location. The people running it were wonderful and took us horse riding. Terelj is really perfect for that as the terrain is easy and when you want a break, you can just climb on top of some of the extraordinary rocks and enjoy the magnificent views. Our horses and saddles were also fantastic. We spent around 3 days there and it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Nomads trips are not cheap though, but really worth the extra money, as all other agencies only bring you to the ger camps situated on the edge of the park. If you can't afford this, maybe just go to have a look at the itinerary and ask in town if a guide will take you there. I think the ger camp was called Princess Ger Camp.

Terelj is next door to UB. During Sovjet time the three hotels there were for different categories of workers and government officials, in three categories (some were much more equal than others!). So the history is interesting. Terelj was also the place where Western select tourist went during Sovjet time. If you go during late Spring/Summer/Fall you will notice how similar the environment is to Scandinavia..
