Hey
I went to Rajasthan last year for the new year holidays (3 weeks).
I had made a camel safari in Jaisalmer and it was great!! Like Alice said, sleeping under the stars (don't forget your sleeping bag, it gets pretty cold at night), singing by the campfire, dining with locals. we took the two-days-safari.. if i would have to ride those camels for any longer, my butt would get wounded for sure!
Don't worry about the groups who organize that stuff. ask the locals or at your hotel.
Have a good day :)

Yeah, i have done it many times. But the best time to travel in Jaisalmer is between October to February where its not hot in India. So, in my opinion try to travel between this period. You will surely have a good time there. You could also have dinner in the sand dunes while enjoying a Rajasthani folk dance, very enjoyable.

I went last January. Camp fire, local musicians, snuggled up in blankets under the stars... It was awesome but beware of bad operators - some wont feed you or just take you out and back in a few hours... and remember that more then 2 hours on a camel with bad stirrups will result in chafing - trust me! Oh, and pack warm - it gets cold at night!

Yeah, a couple of years ago, it was great. We slept on blankets under the stars, sang round the campfire, helped with the cooking, sounds naff but was lovely. i think we did it with the Desert Boys, they were one of the groups recommended by the Lonely planet. the sand gets everywhere though, and if it's windy, with no tents, it'll be fun! took me about an hour to wash the sand out of my hair...
