Tsavo was great. I saw the big 5 and everything else I could have hoped to see. I didn't think the drive was too bad. The roads are a bit rough, but they could've been way worse. The trip was several hours, but there is great scenery along the way. There isn't many closer options.

Quite far. Caroline M. is right in terms of distance. Bad roads is an issue. I suggest flying. kenya air safari does flights to most of the Parks.

Tsavo is famous for Elephants and the history of the Maneaters that were eating railway construction workers in the 1890's. Tsavo West has beautiful volcanic scenery. The chances of seeing Leopard, Lion, Cheetah etc are best early morning or late evening. You would be very lucky to see much during the heat of the day. Would highly recommend staying overnight as a day trip would have you visiting during the hottest part of the day. You really do not want to travel on the Mombasa Road at night. Tsavo East is less travelled and imho not as scenically interesting although you get to it first (at Voi).

It's about 170km away from Mombasa -> hours: depend on your driving. When I was there, the mainroad was in a pretty bad shape; costed me at least 3 hours (or more?).

HiI I don't really remember how far it was, but it's more or less a half-day journey by car. Tsavo is divided in two parts. Both are worth visiting. On the one side there's also a Rhino reserve! But you can see elephants and lions as well as leopards.
