I was traveling on my own last year in August. Guatemala is compared to the other countries I've visited in Central America definitely one of the most dangerous countries. But it is beautiful and if you keep some rules in mind you should be fine (like don't go out after sunset, don't wear any jewelry etc) Tikal is worth a visit and that region isn't that dangerous either. Just avoid going to the capital!

I was thinking about it too. I'm going to visit Guatemala and Belize in March 2013. I'm going with my husband. TRhis year we've been to Philippines that is considered to be not the most safe country for tourists but when U leave big cities such as Manila and Cebu you feel more comfortable:) Maybe there's the same rule in Guatemala? At first we're going to Mexico then to Guatemala. It will be our first visit in that region.

Most major cities in the US are also relatively dangerous - but not to tourists, so if you stay on the tourist (gringo) trail you should be pretty safe. I haven't been to Guatemala in a few years, but just returned from Nicaragua and felt very safe.

Guatemala, as Honduras and El Salvador are among the world's countries with the highest crime rates. But not that often against tourists, as long as you keep basic safety in mind. A visit to Tikal is certainly no problem. Women alone are advised to find a group to watch your back
