San Jose is a great place to start. I suggest staying at Hostel Pangea. It's really central to everything. The gold museum was fun, and there are some nice restaurants around. Other than that, I suggest getting out into the countryside. Costa Rica has an amazing eco-tourism infrastructure. Hostel Pangea is close to the bus lines, I went from there to Puerto Viejo, which is a great beach.

Dirty, seedy, not worth spending a single night in.
Get out asap and go to the coast to see some of the beauty.

I agree with the other posts. we needed to check it out and stayed at the Gran Hotel. This is directly next to the Gold Museum and the pedestrian mall. actually had a good experience - hotel felt like a 1930's movie set. I do not recommend driving in downtown, it was quite scary.

Stay away. There's nothing to do there, at all. Compared to other big cities in latin america (Mexico City, La Habana, Bogota) it's a complete dump. The closes comparison I could make would be Tijuana, but at least Tijuana has excitement and an identity.

It is a very big crowded city! If you like cities it has some pretty cool aspects. I go to Costa Rica to get away from the city. So if you like wildlife, I would suggest getting away form San Jose!

san jose its big has other citys like Escazu, thats the rich and fancy place, so not everything in san ose looks like the central part

It really didn't do anything for me. I suggest getting out of there and into the countryside.

Other than the Gold Museum underneath the Plaza de La Cultura and the fruit from the fruit vendors, I found nothing terribly exciting. Volcan Arenal, however, was another matter entirely...

Stay away if you can. I guess it is just like every main center. Busy, pretty crowded, stinky, and not as much culture. Head to the pacific coast for real life heaven!!!

San José is not very nice, it's not bad to stay there during the week and go somewhere on the weekend (I saw your other question about the CRLA). There are some places to out and we always went out with people from the school.
It's easy to get around there with the Bus and the Taxis are also cheap.
