I'm living in Hungary and extensively traveled (and ate) my way across this part of Europe, just returned from Belgrade, Serbia, so here it goes: Restaurant prices depend on location but in general it's still much cheaper than in Western Europe. In Serbia try cevapi (minced meat rolls) with kajmak (whitebutterycream sauce) and ajvar (paprika paste), pljeskavica (nice minced meat patty) with onions and kajmak, ajvar, they have nice lamb, pork, veal dishes too and sopska salad is a great refreshener and starter made of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, onion and special soft cheese sprinkled on top. Burek is a phylopastry with a bit of fat between the thin layers and is filled with minced meet, cheese, apple, etc and usually locals drink fresh yogurt with it.

In Serbia the KARADJORDJEVA is excellent. There is a lot of Turkish influence here from when the turks occupied Serbia. At the same time they love pork, which is not very Turkish. In fact their love for pork is a rebellious stance against Turkish influence. In Romania food is good there as well. It also has a lot of Turkish influence.

Burek is now one of my favourite foods. We ate so much of it while we were out there. Easy and cheap, but oh so greasy!

cannot answer about all of Eastern Europe. Since this was placed under "Serbia", I will answer accordinly. As put previously, amazing mixture of mediterranean and near-eastern cuisines. Definitely not something to worry about. Just go and enjoy.

Foreigners in Serbia are usually satisfied with chevapchichi (or chevapi, short) and other meat products, like the special "KARADJORDJEVA STEAK". The whole Serbian cuisine is actually very much like Turkish, since they ruled this parts for 400 years! If you mingle with locals maybe they can show you the way to one of the following secret restaurants and fast food shops: DUFF, ZUTA GREDA, POTKOVICA and STARA KOLIBA.
