Take train south of Sydney to last stop, a beautiful high cliff area, hike to cliffs (of course, if you have a car, you could drive there. I was backpacking and hitchhiking back then. But anyway it was a beautiful natural place close to Sydney.

U have one day so do that.
First go to the city and up the sydney tower (in centrepoint shoping centre).
Then take the train to kingscross (or walk)
Walk From Kings Cross to Wooloomooloo wharf. From there walk along the water to Macquaries chair (most famous viewpoint in Sydney). then wander through the botanical gardens a little and watch the thousends of flying foxes in the trees.
Walk to the opera, Wander to cirqular quay and then through the rocks to the tourist information centre in the middle of the rocks (best infocentre in sydney city)
Buy some souvenirs there and ask for the way to go on the Pylon lookout which is on the herbour bridge.
go there and pay $10 with a little museum about the harbour brige and u will see almost as much as from the bridge top which is like 200 dollars (dont do the bridgeclimb if u have just one day!!!)!
After that go back to circular quay and then take the ferry to manly. wander around in manly but dont spend to much time there. Try to catch a ferry at sunset or after. the views are amazing. even at night!
in the end back in circular quay, walk along gorge street down to town hall (dont miss queen victoria bulding)
just next to the town hall turn right towards darling harbour.
Walk around darling harbour and relax a little there.
It will be a long day. but like this u will see a lot of things!
and dont spend the time in museums or aquarium or so there are much better things to do.
These things are only for visitors who stay at least one week.
I stayed more then 4 months and didnt see all the museums which are in the tourist guides. its loss of time.

I like to get a "feeling" for the cities so here are my personal tips, not all sightseeing higlights included:
Walk from Kings Cross, down to the harbour, have a look at the opera, don“t miss the botanic garden and take the ferry (best during sunset). If you still got some time: chinese garden and take a few minutes to enjoy the scenery at the harbour before walking back throu a busy, night active city

Depends on what you like. You can climb the harbour bridge which is supposed to be spectacular, you can go to the Sydney Aquarium, Operah House, to Botany Bay, Manly Beach, the rocks, kings cross... etc.
just depends on what exactly you want to do. there is heaps to see and do there. However I suggest you do your research to determine what you wish to see and/or do as there is way too much to see/do in a one day.
Hope this helps a little!

The Harbour Bridge Climb is a must! You need to book it in advance, but it's well worth it. Amazing views of the city. It'll take up the better part of your day. Afterwards, you can shop and relax and get something to eat around the Rocks and then check out the Opera House.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House, the Rocks, Darling Harbour and Circular Quay- you take a hop-on hop-off bus that will take you past all the main sites and it includes a ferry tour too. Manly is nice but might take too long for just one day

start the day with an early morning surfing lesson; then followed by the coastal walk between the eastern beaches (coogee, bondi and watson's bay). have lunch at watson's bay, while watching the sydney sky line (or maybe go there for dinner to see the lights turn on)- get on a ferry or water taxi from here and head into town and/or manly to see more beaches. a walk around the rocks, and then head to funky surry hills, kings cross, or newtown for dinner in a quite cafe, a noisy pub or take in some live music.

If it's warm while you're there I would go past the harbour (if you don't see the bridge and the opera house you may regret it, even though there's a lot more to Sydney than this) and then spend the afternoon at the beach. The best one to go to would probably be Manly (I hate Bondi, avoid it unless you're into that whole body beautiful thing) and you can take the Manly ferry there which will give you a wonderful trip across the harbour for the price of a ferry ticket. Sydney's a wonderful city- enjoy!

I really like the Rocks area, there are some cool stores down there. The bars around the opera house are good and I really liked wandering around Darling harbour. If its a nice day it could be worthwhile hitting one of the beaches like Bondi, I think there is a pretty good mall out that way now. You can also get take a boat trip from Darling Harbour to the olympic park. Not much to see at the park but the boat ride is nice.

CBD, including Opera House, The Rocks, Queen Victoria Building, George Street, St Mary's Cathedral. Harbour Bridge. Go to Wild Park in Darling Harbour instead of Taronga Zoo, where you need all day.

Go to Circular Quay, visit the Rocks, climb the Pylon on the Harbour Bridge and/or visit the Botanical Gardens, catch a ferry around to Darling Harbour (you'll go under the Harbour Bridge and past Luna Park), have lunch on the steps at Cockle Bay, walk up to Town Hall and check out the QVB. You might want to go up Sydney Tower, but really only do it if it's a clear day.
If you want to go to the zoo you'll need the whole day to do just that, but the ferry ride over there and the views can't be beaten!

Definantly the Harbor, if you want to get souvineers or gifts take the manly ferry across the harbor. While in manly you should check out the beach! Hopefully it isn't crowded. Also I'd say go to Darling Harbor they have museums, art and whatnot. If that isn't your thing try Hyde Park relaxing, some wildlife, and giant chess pieces!

hi!i also recommend a quick ride on the monorail but i thought the aquarium was crap(if you have seen one like singapores that one was a joke).you may get on the red hop on bus(i'm not sure how it's called)but its for tourists and it takes you to many places in one day.its the best way to see sydnay in one day.
