Stay at the YMCA Kowloon, not Waterloo, it is cheaper and it is a nice hotel, not a hostel. You may can get a discounted rate for a long stay. Make sure you tell them you are working at a hospital and if it is Baptist Hospital it is even better they may have a rate you can use. Its a good location for Kowloon, however if you are working Island side, you will be hard pressed to find a place cheap enough to stay.

Check out some of the Guest Houses in Mirador Mansions, Tsimshatsui (Kowloon side, near harbour) Merryland Guest House is pretty good. Much cheaper than hotels and still acceptable standard. www.merrylandguesthouse.com for more details.

Stay at the Nest in Mong Kok/Prince Edward - prices are quite low for Hong Kong standards. I have stayed there myself (www.thenest.com.hk). It's clean, people are really friendly and the location is great; many cheap local restaurants in the area, three subway lines just around the corner!

yeah..go with what Sylvia said...that's about as cheap as you can get here. YMCA is still 2x that much...but Kowloon is way cool to live in. I'd choose that before central.

I don't remember the price, but the YMCA hotel was both a great location and great hotel! but, as I can't remember the cost other than it was a lower cost hotel, it may be much higher than you are looking for.

I live in Hong Kong and a couple of my friends have studied here. For a student, I'd recommend staying at Bishop Lei house - they have good rates for long term stays, about HK$450 per night last time I checked. I think this will be a better option as a hotel will very costly, or you can get someone's couch... http://www.bishopleihtl.com.hk/
