If you love local cultural events, you definitely need to go to see the Opera. Lots and lots of tourists go see them, so you don't have to worry about not following it. Also, the costumes are amazing and it's worth it just to see! Have fun! :D

Beijing Opera is fantastic! But you must make sure you go and see it in a traditional theatre. The best places are: Zhengyici Theatre , Huguang Guild Hall, and Prince Gong Mansion. Please read my review on Beijing Opera for more detail. The story is usually translated in English on screens on either side of the stage, but you will not need any translation to grasp the basic but very funny humour. In my opinion it's an experience not to be missed! I haven't seen the kung fu show in Beijing. I have seen similar shows in London where the production was amazing, possibly better than what they offer in China. I would recommend choosing the Opera over the kung fu show if you can only see one. Lao She Tea House (near Heping Men metro station) also puts on a decent show including opera, acrobatics and various other typically Chinese performances. It's nice but more geared towards tourists. The opera at the places mentioned above is much more authentic.

I have been to the kung fu show and it was great. It was more theater than a real kung fu exhibition though. Which was a little disappointing to me, but I still enjoyed it very much.

Personally, I am not a fan of Operas, but a few of my traveling buddies are and they loved the Beijing opera. If you do go, make sure you get a legitimate ticket provider as often times it is not unusual for someone to sell you a fake: check the date and the name of the performance. If you have a guide, it is best to have them pick up the tickets as the prices may be raised for the 'sucker' foreigner. Definetly go see the kungfu show. It is probably cheaper though if you visit another city.

it depends on if you like screeching and traditional chinese music... the kunfu show rocks but the opera could go either way. We enjoyed them both... it also depends on your definition of an opera, often times they are referring to an acrobat show when they say opera...

Beijing opera it's a must and you shouldn't miss it. You'll probably find a touristic version with English and Japanese translation which is helpfull anyway. You can always leave the room if you bored and eat if you're hungry!

If you like Chinese culture, Chinese Opera is a must. If you think Chinese martial arts movies are cool. Imagine this being performed live before you.

As I have suggested the Show and Marie the Opera, why not see both, for you know people have different tastes. Nice Trip!
