Rent a car!!! Los Angeles is a very big city and if you are on a vacation and you have to find out how the public transport works, you'll be longer in your hotel room than enjoy your visit! BUT look out, it's also horrible to drive over there.. but less than using the public transportation! Enjoy your visit!

Definitely rent a car. LA is one of the worst cities in the US for public transport.

I would rent a car. LA has a horrible public transportation system and you'll just waste time trying to figure out what buses you need to take.

Rent a car and buy a map. PubTran is only useful to those used to taking it. It is very easy to take the wrong bus or the right bus in the wrong direction if your unsure of how things work. Unless you care to sight-see from a moving window all day...

rent a car - the city is tooo big, the transport system is really not well developed and it's not that pricey to rent a car there

Public transport is fine, just expect to pay 1$ for every ride and you may be taking 3-5 busses to get to your destination.
Santa Monica has the best bus system.

Can only second that. If I hadn't known before, I would have been surprized to see a city at that size with such a deficit in public transport. Judging from San Francisco, New York and even Miami (which also lacks a consistent Metro-system) that would have been an out-of-world experience :) So, to put it short: a car sadly is a must.
