I've only seen 3 so far, but my favourit is Ecuador! It is cheap, and just amazing! And not that dangerous as everybody thinks. You just have to travel around there and see every kind of landscape they've got. So go to: Quito (Guayaquil isn't that beautiful, and there it is a bit dangerous); Otavalo, which is famous for his market (bigger one on Saturday), then you have to go to the jungle as well (near Tena), then there's the famous trainrail from Riobamba to Alausi, but I don't know, if it's possible right now. Then you have to see the cost as well! In Puerto Lopez you're near the islands and you're nearer the wales and stuff, but personally, I think Montanita is more beautiful! The beach there's just amazing, and people there ... It's called the "hippietown" as well... I have to say, that Marcelo F. is right, Chile is nice as well, but it is more expensive, and the "Salar the Atacama" is just a turists point and three times more expensive then the rest. And the "Salar de Uyuni" in Bolivia is nicer it seems... ;) Tell me where you went in the end!

I went to Colombia and saw Cartagena De Indias and Santa Marta. If I could see one more country it would be Peru to visit Machu Picchu.

If you have to pick ONE, I guess, I'd say Chile. It's MUCH safer than all the alternatives and the nature is amazing and diverse. Beware though, that depending on your time allowance and preference you have to pick and choose. 4000 kilometers separate the Northen most point from the Southernmost in Chile. In the North you get deserts and highlands (the latter you get everywhere in Chile); in the South you get Patagonia and Terra del Fuego.

If you want something really different, meet native people and see things not many turists have i'd say paraguay :) i looove paraguay :P the people there are all mixed with indians and they have their own language; the guaraní. They all speak spanish though except the very poor ones and the ones in the country. It's a very poor country so it's really cheap to travel there. In the north you have desert and amazing trees all with spines like cactuses. In ciudad del este everything is really cheap and it's easy to go over to brazil (foz do iguazu) and argentina (puerto iguazu) and there you have the iguazu falls that are really beautiful. If you have to choose take the argentinian side. Close to ciudad del este you have the second biggest dam in the world: itaipu. In the south, in encarnacion, you have ruins called las ruinas de trinidad. From encarnacion you can easily go over to argentina. There is a city up in the north called pedro juan caballero and half the city is on the brazilian side calle ponta pora. There is only one road dividing this city into these two countries and nobody's guarding the place so it's really cool to go over it. Hope this helped! :) The fact is that nobody really knows Paraguay and nobody ever goes there so everyone's missing out! :D

Id go to Peru. I know that there are far more interesting and unspoiled countries to go to on the continent, Colombia is definately on my own must do list. But Peru has still got a good atmosphere about it and there is planty to see and do at a reasonable price. The landscape is beautiful and il never ever forget that listing impression of seeing Machu Pichu for the first time after trekking the for=ur days to get there. Get there now before it becomes even more of a tourist trap than it already is.

Definitely Colombia ! Because of the lack of tourists and the variety of landscape and people. I've been there twice already and going back beginning of next year. When going don't miss : Bogota, the Zona Cafetera, Guajira desert, Cartagena and the San Agustin-Tierradentro area if you're into mysterious pre-Columbian sculptures and graves. And don't let Colombia's reputation scare you off. Large areas of the country are no more 'unsafe' than the rest of South America and because of the lack of tourists there's also less of a chance to get mugged. ;)

Peru without a doubt!!! Lima is nice to visit for a few days, the Amazon is amazing, and Cuzco is a place where everyone will visit in Peru which is the starting and ending point to one of the most amazing trails in the world and one of the man made wonders in the world which is the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu. This country rates as one of the best for me in the world!!!

While Bolivia is my favourite country so far in South America. If I could only visit ONE country I would chose Brazil. Because it is so immense. You can visit Rio and the south for nice beaches. Then go inland to the Pantanal wetlands. Then up north along the coast to see sand dunes and wild sunsets. Then go deep into the remote Amazon. It has great diversity!! I hope to visit northern Brazil some day...

I think it really depends what sort of an experience you are looking for and how long that one trip is going to be. If you are really into outdoor adventures, i would definitely choose Ecuador. There you can do anything from hiking to mountain biking to white water rafting to sky diving. The people are amazing, the food is eclectic and the prices are right. If you want something a little more metropolitan, I would choose Argentina which has a great European flair. Cities like Buenos Aires and Mendoza have incredible culture, incredible architecture, incredible wine and of course incredible steak. It's an enormous country though, so it is hard to see it all. If you want to trek through the jungle, Brazil is the obvious answer since the majority of that country is covered by the Amazon. If you are interested in ancient cultures of South America, Peru is probably the best place. With Cusco, Arica and Tumbes, you can get caught up in the Incan way of life.

Definetely Bolivia!! It's such a different coutry, time there seems to have stopped somehow...so many traditions, culture and kind people. La Paz is a crazy city, but it's a "must-do". Islands on the Titikaka lake are fascinating, especially Amantanì (on the peruvian side) but the best experience i had in Bolivia is the adventure in the jungle, starting from Trinidad. You can see so many animals and you actually live in the jungle!! Sucre and Potosì are also a must-do if you go to Bolivia. Good luck for your trip! ohh...and go to Bolivia!!!! :)
