You should go to Klagenfurt. It is a small city (90.000ppl) has a lake with places to relax and a city with a lot of nice pubs. It is a place of culturell mixture. Enjoy!

I would recommend you to visit Kärnten (Carinthia). The southermost district of Austria. In the summer you can enjoy swimming in lake Wörthersee or hike in the mountains. In the summertime are also lots of partys, like teh fetê blanche, going on around the lake. Also Klagenfurt the capital of Carinthia is very picturesque.

You should visit Linz, the european capital of culture 2009. the city is located between Salzburg and Vienna, at the Danube. Have a look at www.linz09.at oder www.linz.at/tourismus. If you have any questions on Linz, I will be glad to answer them! Hope to see you! Gisi

Do visit Vienna,Salsburg and Innsbruck. At Salsburg don't miss the ice cave and innsbruck is a small picturesque town on the banks of river Inn..Walk along the Inn river and explore the town by walk.. The best part is little away from the town u can head to the Alps and if you love Crystals do visit the Swarowski Crystal museum and pamper urself :) ithroughly loved it.. If you have time and love nature, take a Danube cruise from Vienna to Budapest.. you will love it.. i suggest you spend the day on the alps and i stayed 2 days n night at a hotel where the winter olympics was held. nice n comfortable place n great view..

If you are going to Vienna in August, there's supposed to be free, open-air concerts in the city...

Just a quick note, when I was out in Vienna 5 years ago alot of stuff seemed to be closed on Monday. But is beautiful and feels very safe there. I loved Slovakia too so try and get a train over if you can, the Old Town area is amazing!

Vienna is a must, try the museumsquartier for museums, and mariahilferstrasse next to it is good for shopping. There are loads of old imperial palaces, and a trip out to Schoenbrunn is a must - it's the old summer palace, and includes a zoo in the grounds. And check out the Naschmarkt/Flohmarkt, it's an open air market with a wonderful atmos, and just down a side street near there is Cafe sperl, which is really nice, and traditionally a hang-out for artists, poets and philosophers.

I just went to Salburg and loved it. If you plan on see many of the sights there you should get a Salburg card which will cover public transportation and admission fees. Make sure you go on the Hellbrunn Palace trick fountains tour (on a nice day)!

Austria is safe, although expensive. It is also very clean, and everyone speaks English. The country looks like a picture postcard. You can attend a Mozart concert almost any night in Vienna. If you love music, or the movie "Sound of Music" you must go to Salzburg. It is across the country, but Austria is a small country and easily travelled. Train or bus or rental car are all good options. Depending upon what you like, there are lakes, mountains, villages and cities to visit. To take in the best of it, in one week I'd do 2/3 Vienna and 1/3 in Salzburg. You'll see a lot of beautiful countryside between the cities.

Unless you're into being inside all day, I think a few days in Vienna is enough. Try a cruise up the Danube to Melk and see the Abbey there. It's amazing. There is a bike path between Passau and Bratislava. You could ride south toward Bratislava or north toward Passau. Bike rentals are available in Vienna. Check out the Donauradweg.at if you're interested. Maybe you could get a little culture and see something of the country. Salzburg truly is wonderful and easy to navigate on foot. Train travel is the best.

I'm from Austria, so I completely agree with Vienna and Salzburg. It just gives you a feel of two completely different cities, and both are beautiful places to visit in the summer.

There is certainly a lot to see and do in Vienna, but it is definitely possible to see a good chunk in a few days. I would suggest also going into the country a bit - Salzburg is very beautiful.

I agree. One week is not enough time in Vienna as it is, so don't be overly ambitious. Vienna is such a beautiful city, and there's a lot to see there. You need to check out the Hofburg Palace, the Habsburg gardens, the Lipizzaner horses, and not to mention the dozens of great museums in Vienna. Also, Vienna has a great subway train system so it won't be difficult to get around.

If I had only a week in Austria, I'd spend it all in Vienna. Any less time than that in such a city would be terribly unsatisfying. Vienna is also very safe and easy to navigate for a big city- good for a solo traveller, I think, but probably a bit more expensive that way.
