Close to Bali there are some islands, Gilli islands which are good for diving and snorkeling, i heard they are beautiful, didn't get a chance to go cos you need at least 2 days there, and i only had 10 days in Bali. And also very beautiful is Lombok and very quiet. While in Ubud try the white water rafting and an elephant ride it's fun. And visit the monkey forrest. Less than 2 weeks in Bali is not enough.

Bali is beautiful. If you want to see the real bali go to Ubud and the surrounding area, I came back a week ago. Ubud is the cultural heart of bali, and the artistic part also. There are also some amazing hotels if you can spend 2 nights at the ubud hanging gardens totally worth it, the views are out of this world, plus you will have your own private infinity pool overlooking the forrest. For a bit more partying go to the Kuta area, Legian and Seminyak, and when you are there don't miss the famous Seminyak sunset from the Ku de ta bar. It's an amazing bar. Be there at 5.00pm or 5.30pm. Enjoy it, Bali is heaven.

Honestly, you should definitly do the 3: Sumatra, Java, Bali. 1 week each is enough to see many things.
Sumatra: Jungle, Oran Outan, Lake Toba..
Java: Jogyakarta, Borobudur, Semera, Bromo, Merapis..
Bali: Kuta, Ubud, Volcanic beach and so on..
Indonesia is a great place, just look for something else than Bali.

spend most of your time in Bali. Many things to discover. Do not stay in Kuta or Seminyak. You cannot observe the real life there. Instead go to Ubud. We have stayed there two weeks @ the Ketut's Place. Ubud is also an excellent start up point when you explore the entire island.Go aldo Tenganan Village to see the Aga tribe.

If you're interested in volcanoes - Krakatoa - has been showing signs of erupting ...again. Getting boats off the shores of Carita (West Java) is possible...
There are also less seismic-activity volcanoes up in Sumatra, in Berstagi (or can also be spelled Brestagi). This village is just north of Lake Toba (which is a beautiful crater-lake and peaceful). This village is also south of the orangutans, if you're interested in seeing some orangutans.
There really is a TON to do in this country, depending on what your preferences are!
If you go to Bali and would like to see a beautiful sunset at a club-like place, Ku-De-Ta (located south of Seminyak), is a hopping place...
Borobadur/ Jogjakarta (or Yogyakarta) is definitely a must as many above have already suggested.

if you like cities, try staying in Jakarta. Alot of things to do there and definitely check out a cluc called X2 in Plaza Senayan. If you're looking for nature and some partying, Bali is probably the place for you. Try checking out Dreamland. If you're just looking for nature then check out Bunaken on North Sulawesi. It has the greatest range of sea wildlife in the world.

Borubudor near Yogyakarta on Java, the tri-colored lakes of Kelimutu, Bali (in general) and the Komodo National Park if you don't mind watching a goat be fed to the dragons.

Go to the Gedung Bate/Sem Po Kong Temple in Semarang. The temple was built for the Chinese Ming admiral Cheng Ho, who is venerated both as a god and as a muslim saint. The oldest mosque in Indonesia is the mosque in Demak in Northern Java, well worth a visit.

If you like diving, try to go to Labuanbajo, Flores island in East Nusa Tenggara; Wakatobi reserve area in Southeast Sulawesi is among the best in the world; Manado in North Sulawesi is also a great place to dive. If you are a begineer, try to dive in Bali and Lombok area (the three gilis) awesome places. Or you can go from Bali to Komodo Island and dive along the way, great experience.

depends on the activities you want to do here: nightlife, culture, watersports, trekking? my two cents, since indonesia has the most diversity in underwater life, i suggest you to try some diving. the wave breaks are good too for surfing.

If you are looking for beautiful beaches go to the Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno). They are just wonderful and not to difficult to reach. Go to Lombok first, then up north to a town called Bangsal where you can catch a boat.

I don't know where you are in Indonesia...it's huge...but I hope you do not just stop in Bali if you are going East...go to Lombok, Flores, Kimodo...there are also a ton of "gili" small sandbar islands...they are awesome. The hidden magic of Gili Trawangan can not be matched.

Bali - you can hire a cab for a day (make a deal at a fixed price) and go see some rice fields, monkey forests and what not. - Still too touristic? If you are up for some peace and quiet take a little plane from Bali (you can get the ticket at the airport) to Lombok, which should take 30min. OR there should be a boat that can get you across in 2 hours. In my memory cheapish and financially viable.
On Lombok are not quite as many tourists, they have little tours with small boats to even more remote islands "Gili Trawanang, Gili Meno/ Mono?" - Very fun.
There you can do snorkling and other fun things. Lombok is great for walking along the beach, discovering little local bars, eating seafood soups and other goodies for next to nothing and having the odd beer or too. Spot the odd localized English/ German with socks and sandels at a bar and ask for a few tips ;)

Just been to Indonesia for 4 weeks. Go to Ubud for sure, cultural hart of Bali and do the eco cycling tour: 30km downhill (isn't that great?), throught the countryside of Bali, meet the real Bali countryside people, walk through rice fields, visit the monkey forest, eat the best food! and check website www.viavacare.com if you really want to visit a place out of the touristic area (and give them a call to check if you can stay in the most awesome backpackers bed that I have stayed in!). Whatever you'll do you will have a great trip! Enjoy! P.s. and take really as many massages as you want, fantastic!

Don't spend too much time in Giava: it's nothing special (Pranbaran and Borobudur temples are worth seeing). Centre Celebes (Rantepao) is interesting but I would not spend more than 4 days. Bali and Lombok are just wonderful and are worth the whole vacation!!!
