Stockholm isn't cheap, but the Hotel Riddargatan is reasonably priced, clean and in one of the best positions in Stockholm if you want a central location - good luck! It can still be quite cold in March, so I'd avoid staying on a boat - that's better left for the summer months.

The Hostel Chapmann & skeppsholmen is on a nice quit spot just opposite of Gamla Stan. Prices in the hostel are much cheaper than on the boat. But be aware that sheets and breakfast are not included, that makes the price less competitive. For lunch the restaurant the black sheep (in english de swarte shap something like this in swedish) at the nobel museum is a great deal. Daily menu or pizza including salad, water, cofee, tea and biscuits for under 10 €. But dont get there to late it gets crowed.

My partner and I stayed at the StayAt Apartments at Kista (http://www.stayat.eu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18&catid=10&lang=en&Itemid=20) and found it to be quite affordable. Look for offers at http://gtahotels.com - we managed to get 1 night free since we booked 3 nights in a row!
P.S. It's more worth it to stay in apartments/hotels rather than hostels as far as I've found. Unless you're travelling in a big group.
