It quite a bad idea to take the Transsiberian Railway in the middle of winter. Of course the train itself is warm, but because of the ice on the outside of the train, they stop the train every couple of hours to hack away the ice. So the journey takes a lot longer. I wouldn't recommend it (my sister and boyfriend both did the railway).

You can check the temperatures quite easily on the Internet. The train is warm, and if Siberia was too cold people wouldn't live there.
The question you are really asking is: Is Siberia too cold for Melanie L., but only Melanie L. can answer this question..

We took the transsib in February, from Moscow to Ulaan Baatar, stopping in Irkutsk to spend a few days visiting Lake Baikal and Olkhon Island. I would definitely, definitely, recommend it. If you get the chance to go to the island, stay at Nikita's Guesthouse.
We went second class and had a cabin to ourselves (two people).
Bring a good book for the train and enjoy the ambience. Really, Siberia only seems like Siberia in the winter.

i think the time of year is not as big a deal as has been mad eout to be, if you are form australia, like myself, i think you woudl find the winter in siberia interesting, and certainly a vivid change to the general weather patterns we have back home, whilst i have not done the trans siberian my best mate has and he loved it, i am currenlty doing winter in europe (finland, so ill be as cold as siberia) and i think you should definatle do it if you wnat to. i would be taking at least one set of good warm winter clothes though, for if you wnat to explore places when the train has its stops, you will need to be warm. good luck :D

Buy A Descent Jacket And Go For It! Nils Has A Great Point, If It Was Too Cold People Wouldnt Live There. As For The Journey Taking Longer, Its Better Value For Money And Even More Time To Drink Vodka And Make Friends.
