hi dude
I've done a big round trip in Indo. Defenitly try to go to Sumatra and visit Bukit Lawang, Volcanoes, jungle and Lake Toba. Chilled out atmosphere, friendly people, good food. In Java go to Yogjakarta and visit the tempels. Bali is very touristy but there are calm places aswell. If you go Kuta, do the waterpark for a day... good fun and then get out and go backpacking. Definetly go to Komodo and see the dragons. Not only is the trip over there amazing but seeing the dragons is cool aswell. Get certified to go diving and do some dives in this region. You can catch a sailcruise from Lombok to Komodo and then further down to Flores. Some get of and travel further or you can sail back with the same boat. I've travelled further and catched a cheap flight out of east timor to darwin, OZ. Only 75 sterling.

Well, I stayed almost 6 weeks there. Good places in Bali (except the beach) are Ubud and Amed (for snorkelling and scuba dive). Lombok is also quiet. Don't forget to go to Flores and stop in Moni, a little village close to the Keli Mutu volcano (the only one with 3 lakes of 3 different colours). From Flores, you may take a boat to go to Rinca Island (less people than Komodo). Sulawesi is also a "must see". If you're lucky, you'll assist to a funeral, it's amazing!!

If you like diving, go to Manado, North Sulawesi. It's perfectly safe. It's one of the diver's paradise. There, You can take diving lesson as well if you don't know how.
For nightlife... definitely Jakarta and Bali is the best ;)

if u're interested in beaches n nightlife Bali is the answer.beside that, Bangka Belitong island in Sumatra gives u a magnificent view of beach.
in Java, Jogjakarta is one of the most visited city by backpacker in Indonesia. u're gonna find many cheap hotels. it is just cost u less than IDR 50000 or USD 5 a night. it is on Jalan Kaliurang (Kaliurang street) and Jalan Malioboro (Malioboro street).Borobudur is about 1 hour from Jogjakarta -- if u're interested in historical stuffs. ohh, one more interesting place to visit in Java is BANDUNG. it is a highland. n center of food traveler.Bandung also provides a place for u to bath in the natural hot water springs. welcome to Indonesia. and thanks for visiting my country -- regards.

Dunno which part of Indonesia will you be heading to but u can skip Jakarta.Traffic jam is the worst thing there. Is just like any other big city. U can head to Puncak (a highland resort) nice villa u can rent. Enjoy the fresh air. And also Bandung - visiting organic farm, volcano sites,Bali is great place for beaches and nite life, Borobodur - historical site.

Go to Sulawesi and up through the middle - it is hard to get to and other than Tana Toraja - which is definitely worth the visit, there are very little tourist...
Indonesia has beautiful beaches everywhere - even in Bali - a 'touristy' island you can get away and enjoy, relax, fish.

Definately the Gili islands for relaxing and diving. Try Lake Maninjou in Sumatra for even more relaxing. Bukit Lawang in Sumatra is great for trekking and seeing orangutans. All the other places mentioned are great too.

First, go to Sumatra (like everyone had mentioned) then you may wish to explore Java island by visiting Jakarta & Bandung for night life or to Anyer/Carita beach/ Thousand islands near to Jakarta for sailing or just relaxing. Warning, that in January, you may find troubles with rainy & flooding season in Jakarta area. Then, go to Yogyakarta for cultural things like Borobudur & Prambanan Temples, then Mountain Bromo for nature. Later on go to Bali to enjoy white beach in Nusa Dua or Uluwatu areas or lava beach in Lovina or Ubud. Since you look for night life, then Kuta & Legian area will be suitable for you to stay while in Bali. Then take a boat to Komodo island to see Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard during the day. If you fed up with partying, then you can go to Lombok for less crowded yet beautiful beach like Bali. I suggest you to dive or snorkling. Indonesian maritime life is extremly beautiful, something that should not be missed. Excellent diving/snorkling areas: Candi Dasa (Bali), Lombok, Raja Ampat (West papua) and Bunaken (Sulawesi). Have fun!

look up the expat indonesia site. You will find it on a google site. There is also a hiking club called java lava that hikes Indonesias volcanos on the weekends and camps out on top. There are tons of affordable resorts. Try Thousand Islands for fishing. Go to Bali!!!

try Sumatra: climb Mt Kerinci (touristic, yes, but first you gotta get up there! it's 3800m above sealevel), see Bukit Tinggi, Padang Panjang, Padang (some very nice beaches and little islands just off the coast) etc. You'll get less tourists down in Westsumatra but not everyone will be able to speak English, so learn a bit of Bahasa Indonesia. If you travel further north (Lake Toba, Medan etc) you'll head back into areas with regular tourists. Hope this helps a bit?
