I felt quite safe in Rio..even when touring the favelas/slums (although I had a guide). Like any city, just keep your head about you & use common sense!

No. It's just as dangerous as any other latin American big city. That is, don't show off, don't go to the slums on your own (if you really want to go, there are travel agencies who can take you there), don't walk alone on dark streets at nights... and you'll be fine. :-)

No. I live here. It is a big city and every big city has dangerous places ( I was in Paris when a group of guys start to robber everybody in the street! ). But in tourist area there are a lot of policemen...

Não. O Rio de Janeiro é vítima de sensacionalismo, pois a cidade está sempre nos noticiários. Todos os tipos de violência que lá ocorrem, ocorrem também em várias outras cidades. A exemplo, cito as cidades do interior do Pará e até mesmoa a capital de Pernambuco, como cidades que são muito mais perigosas que o Rio de Janeiro.

Not at all. I live here and feel perfectly safe. You should take the basic precautions you would, on every big city. Be friendly, but don't trust too much. Have fun, but don't get high. Don't leave your belongings unattended...

Rio de Janeiro is dangerous as many other big cities over world. If you want to visit Rio, take care of your pockets and purses on the turistics spots and STAY AWAY of the FAVELAS...

You have to be careful as any other city in the world! There are some places that we brazilians call favelas where there are dangerous. I went to Rio, and i was 14 at the time.. and my parents didn't go. Just me and 2 friends.. if u are used to travel around the world u might know what are the things that u have to be careful. I was in Rome last year and i was at a place (that i dont remember which was...sorry) but i was scared and me and my parents meet a brazilian guy that lives in Rome and he said: dont speak, nothing.. even in english! because if someone realize that u guys arent italians, might became dangerous.. so be careful! and please, dont go to favelas/slums.. it might be dangerous! if u want more tips get in touch! xoxo

Rio is really not bad. You need to be aware just are you are when you travel to other destinations, but you really only need common sense. Don't walk around with an excess of jewlery and don't carry all your money in the same spot, or all on you for that matter. Just be street/travel wise and you will be fine.
