I loved it. Esfahan and kashan are beautiful. Persepolis is amazing!! The ziggurat and choqa zanbil is also pretty amazing. If your asmathic the pollution is a bit hard to handle but otherwise go for it.

Iran is fantastic - such a diverse and beautiful country. Don't believe the negative media hype!! The people are extremely friendly, welcoming and hospitable, and because they are less used to tourists you get none of the hassle that is common in other Middle Eastern/North African countries. I travelled there as a lone female and never had any problems. Shiraz is stunning - so many beautiful mosques, the old citadel, markets etc. My favourite experience though was being invited in to witness a Shia funeral, as well as going in to a madrassa full of mullahs. In Iran you will find time and time again that it is these personal HUMAN experiences that make it so special. You will find yourself picnicking with families, sharing pomegrantes, eating walnuts, having dinner in family homes... the hospitality is humbling. Obviously the sights are amazing aswell - but those can easily be covered in a guide book! Make sure to see Persepolis, Esfahan (the bridges and Imam Khomeini Square), Yazd (incredible windtowers and little alleyways), Abyaneh (very unique - all the buildings are made from mudbrick and the women dressed in very antiquated unique traditional clothing). Qom is spectacular. Try to see some Zurkaneh (a traditional sport & a mix of the athletic & spiritual). Also, the massive memorial to the victims of the Iran/Iraq war (not far outside Tehran) is extremely moving.

Lovely country. Isfahan & Persepolis definitely highlights for me also. I was lucky enough to have travelled to the mud city at Bam before it was all but destroyed by a massive earthquake. I understand it is being 'rebuilt' but have no idea if its worth a visit these days. I also really enjoyed the souq in Shiraz. The scenery around the country is stunning, the deserts serene and the people incredibly hospitable.

Iran is one of those 'must-VISIT' places on Earth. I could repeat all that have been written here so far and it would not suffice. I have visited Iran five time already, each time going to a different part of the country, most recently in May 2010 and visited Mashhad (and the nearby cities of Tus, Neyshabur, Torqabeh, Shandiz). Great places. You better plan your trip and have a local travel agency to take care of all details, including your visa paperwork. Should you need any assistance in this I can suggest you one or two that I used myself. Everything will depend on how much time you have available. I would say that a minimum of 15 days is needed to visit some of its most interesting places: Tehran, Yazd (and if possible, please try a night at the caravanserai Zein-o-Din), Esfahan (The Zayandeh river and its historical, old bridges are stunning), Shiraz - the city of poets and your base for Persepolis (thahkt-e Jamshid) & Pasargad (the tomb of Cyrus the Great 'Kurosh-e Kabir'), Kashan and its beautiful Qajar-era houses, Abyaneh. If you have some more time, than Soltanieh, Qazvin, the Alamut area. All the best and wish you a great time in Iran. /// Om Shanti!

I agree with the others. It is a beautiful country and the people there are amazing! The pollution and the traffic overall is a downside and they don't really take care of their nature. They literately throw their trash at the spot. But otherwise, wow. Mt demavend is really a sight for sore eyes and Esfahan is very beatiful. Not as good at kebab as i thought, but their fish is really good. Kalepache is also something very... different sort of speak.

I've been there many times, it's a country one can fall in love with. Esfahan and Shiraz with Perspolis is very recommended, Yazd is a wonderful desert town (try to get a room in a hotel in the city center). Depending on how much time you have and what you'd like to see: the north of Iran and the Caspian is well worth seeing, completely different climate. Maybe go there camping in one of the small huts. Mashhad it awesome but maybe worth a visit only when you have much time. When you're in Tehran, see the mountains; don't miss Darband or Darakeh

I agree with what's written below: Persepolis is trully amazing. Iranians call it "tarte jamshid". Most "must see" sites are tombs or monuments to dead people ... it gets depressing although the building are definitely beautiful. Women must be very careful the way they dress ... no excuse for being a tourist!
