If you want to take the tourist tours - that look like a safari - it's safe, but fake. If you really want to know how things work there you can contact some NGOs, visit their instalations and talk to people. You also can stay at a hostel in one of the favelas. All theses ways are safe.

It is safe if you go to a pacified favela as Santa Marta in Botafogo neiborhood.

no, not really. In their eyes, we are the rich people, travelling around, walking around with loads of money (even if we aren't), wearing fancy clothes & jewels. You wouldn't be the first one to never leave the favela's again. There are, however, taxi's who take you on a tour there. So if you really want to see it, I think that's the safest way to do so.

I can't agree more with Eliane's information below. Human Safaris is NOT nice.Go independently with locals. Either an NGO or a local friend. A lot more REAL and rewarding.

I would not travel there. There are tours that will take you past them, take your pics and such but EVERY local told use to stay away from the real favelas.

OK - If you go with somebody from the place or someone who knows the place. Then things depend very much on dress and attitude..

If you're interested in it, you can actually find tours that ship tourists into a favela, joining a party and such. Not all places are like in the movies. I stayed at a Hostel and they offered those things. However, even if youre told they're safe, you probably still shouldn't go alone. It's not worth the risk!
