For west European standards, it's quite cheap. And there are more than enough Museums and Historical places.

It depends what you mean "cheap". Spb is cheaper than Moscow but it is one of the most expensive cities in region. But if you are a traveller with rich expierence you know how to look for "economy" trip.
1) Look for "business lunch" in cafees and bars in the center of city - usually it costs ~5 euro (soup + dish + non-alcoholic drink). But don't expact big portions ;-)
2) Look for "Pelmennaya" - in the center portion of "Pelmeni" with 1 beer costs ~6-7 euro.
3) Price for beer in bars: ~2-2,5 euro 0,5l local lager, ~3 euro 0,5 dark beer, ~5 euro 0,5 for european brands.
Other ways are more expensive. Clubs are much expensive.
Transport:
1) Underground ticket (it's a special coin) - 25 rubles, ~0,6 euro
2) Local bus (it's smth like "dolmush" in Turkey, small buses going through the city) - 30 rubles, 0,75 euro
3) Taxi... It depends. There're no "taxi counters" in taxi in Spb. You must call to the taxi-company, ask for the cab, tell them the way and ask about price - the driver will accept this price. I din't call for taxi in English, you must ask about it in hotel. Don't catch taxi at the street!!! Of course, if you have a lot of money, perfectly speak Russian and know all Spb's prices - you could try ;-)))

Unfortunally Booking.com DOESN'T give you good price for Spb. I prefer HRS.com. I was in Spb this week - I choosed "Na Sapernom" hotel for 1400 rubles for single room (35 euro) with bathroom and breakfast. It's not good place for "business tour" - the room was much old and furniture... eh... The breakfast wasn't "rich" also. No internet inside. BUT - it's in the center!!! 10 minutes walking and you're at Nevsky Prospect :-)
I don't know actual prices for museums, boat tours etc.
I also could advise one interesting way to see more for less price. If you travelling not alone (2, 3 or 4 persons) - rent a car! Try to find the cheap rental company and get it. It could costs ~50 euro per day for "economy class car". Renting the car you must try to get GPS-navigation also. Choosing this way you could visites a lot - Peterhof, Pushkin, Ladoga Lake, Novgorod ets. and don't pay for organized tours.
Good luck, have a nice visit to Petersburg and don't worry, you could get more for less indeed!

Well, in 2 weeks you can see most of must-haves in the city itself and head for a couple of suburbs - Petrodvorets (i.e. Peterhof) and Pushkin, for example. Take 1 day for Hermitage (Winter Palace), a couple for just walking in the downtown (everything included between rivers Fontanka and Neva, Peter and Pavel fortress), buy a night trip (bus or boat) to see the lights and the bridges, look into major cathedrals (Spas-on-Blood is a must) and visit a theater (opera of ballet - Mariinsky is the best).
About the prices - for foreign tourists everything is more expensive. But museums and lodging (if you choose wise) are cheaper than in other parts of Europe. Walking is free, excursions and boat cruises are rather cheap (if you don't head to Petrodvorets on a boat - local train is an option), food is costly only on Nevsky, stroll a bit and you'll find something decent. In any case prepare to walk long distances - metro stations are far even in the center. Souvenirs near Spas-on-Blood are the most expensive.

It is cheap (compared to Europe). Don't forget to visit the Hermitage and the white square! It's fantastic :)

St Petersburg is cheaper than Moscow, but that's not saying much, sadly. The downtown area is a must and a big chunk of the must-see spots are off one street - Nevsky prospect, including the Russian Museum and the Hermitage. In addition to the city itself, make sure you take day trips to the surrounding palaces - Peterhof at the very least.
