When I was in Rome, I carried my money in those waist wallets that you can tuck under your pants. The neck wallets work also, but I find those to be irritating to the neck. Be aware when you're traveling the subway. Those who look most innocent tend to pick pocket, case in point, we notice a woman carrying a baby. Should anyone "bump" into you when there isn't a big crowd around you, check your possessions!

No more or less than anywhere else - statistically, London is far more dangerous - but use your city smarts. Don't wave cash, flashy phones or expensive cameras around. Be particularly careful in crowded areas like metros or on the piazza on front of the Pantheon. For locals, there is one bus line, the 64 between Termini and the centro storico, that has an awful reputation for pickpockets, because it is densely populated and used a lot by tourists. (I learned this after my sister, a savvy New Yorker, was robbed on that line.)
In a nutshell: don't worry about it, but be aware of your surroundings. And have a great time!

Watch your pockets, your change, you wallet, and your camera and you'll be fine.

I have travelled extensively in Asia, Africa, Central and South America, US cities etc. Rome is the worst. Pickpockets and Thieves must make up the majority of the population. Some call Rome the Eternal City. I call Rome the City of Thieving Bastards.

We felt relatively safe in Rome but were accosted by what we lovingly call the "Flower Nazis" you are walking along and poof a flower is thrust in your hand because you are such a beautiful person. Then the flower Nazis hound your husband/partner to give them money. They are a menace. I am from the south and good manners are in my DNA but have found the only thing that works with them is being rude. If you are handed a flower immediately give it back and ignore the flower Nazis. They will follow you for a short distance but eventually move on to their next victim.

I've heard a lot about it, but I did not meet any of them in Rome, so just be careful as at any other place and have fun!

Like anywhere you travel, you need to be aware of your surroundings, but when I was in Rome, it did not seem anymore likely for a mugging than anywhere else I've travelled.

I'm from Rome and I can tell you that Rome is not worse than any other major city in the world, the fact is that it's packed with tourists and where there are tourists there are people who try to take advantage of them. But if you don't do anything stupid you won't have any problems (for example don't pay anyone who says he can give you a tour unless he has proof he is an official guide) ENJOY!

Yes, but you don't need to be paranoid, just watch out for pick pockets who are mostly small children, often they surround you in groups and you don't know what hit you

I just spent 4 days in Rome and I had no problems...You just have to be careful like in all other places too
(but don't put your money & other important stuff in a rucksack, especially in the subway or bus, because there are so many people so it's very easy for them to take something out of you rucksack and you wouldn't realize it..)

A wise thing to do when you are in Rome is to seperate your money and always pay attention. I went to Rome a few years ago and my friend lost all her money in the metro. It is really a hastle going to the police and the embassy. I hope the thievery has become less through the years but it is always wise to separate your money!

I just went to Rome this past weekend with my friend (so two females traveling) and had no problem. We kept our bags over our shoulders the entire time and kept the zippers in front of us. I never felt threatened. We used the trains and were out at night. As long as you are careful, you should be fine.

Pickpockets are definately a problem, spread your cash around, and secure it.
Also watch out for people "dipping" into backpacks....
But dont let this spoil your trip , its a beautiful city

No. There are fewer problems now than there were 20 years ago. Just keep your valuables safe and out of sight (money belt). There is zero violent crime in the tourist areas

I was told to watch out for pickpocketers, however I never experienced any crime. We carried our stuff in side backpacks which we could switch to carry in our front during crowded places, and therefore better watch our stuff. Be careful around places like the Trevi fountain where crowds press in, and keep out of places/streets where there is no one else, and you will be fine!
