Depending where you're leaving from you could fly over to Oslo with a low cost flight, then I suggest, after visiting Oslo, maybe the Munch museum too, you take a train to Bergen. The Oslo-Bergen line (they say) is one of the most beautiful in the world. I went there last summer and it was incredible, amazing, wonderful!! I took soooo many pictures from the train!! It's a long ride, think 7 hrs, but it's totally worth it. Then in Bergen we stayed in a hostel on a hill from which you could see the fjord sooo well!! Another great thing was the midnight sun...we stayed up really late not even realizing it!! We went in August. We weren't able to stay there very long though, we were travelling all over Europe, so Oslo and Bergen it's all we saw!

A late answer...but would recommend my homearea (Stryn, Nordfjord, Sognefjord, Bremanger, Geirangerfjord). Spring is nice, and early fall (september). february is usually a nice wintermonth if you like wintersports like skiing. summer can be amazing, but the weatherchanges in Norway are quick and it rains a bit - especially on the westcoast...so bring warm, rainproof clothes any time of year. And your hiking boots. Norway is all about nature and outdoor experience. climbing, rafting, hiking, camping, skiing...What kind of vacation do you want. Send me a message, and I'll help you out! I suggest you the fjord region with Bergen as a central place. I also like very much Oslo, and I recomend you to climb the Preikestolen (near Stavanger).

I've been in march and was very cold but amazing..
I'd suggest going to Stavagner..Bergen and all the Fjord in the surrounding...amazing!!
besides i think it could be great for you to go in the winter time expecially in the northern part 'cause you can see the northern lights.

It's a real late, but..
It really depends on what you wanna see. Bergen has some great old cultural sight, 7 mountains, and a harbour that's on UNESCO's list.
Norway also have some great fjord's and great mountain scenary, like Hardangervidden.. And I would recoment you to see Nidarosdomen, it's a church up in Trondheim.
As said, the train ride from Oslo-Bergen (or the other way around) is great. I've taken it several times, and the scenery still amazes me.

Depends on what u are looking for..I also recomend Senja..Norways next biggest eisland...Rent a car and drive all around it in a day..Beautyful montains and great sceenery..
If u like Warm climate and boats and bading oppertuneties i recommend. The sities between Stavern and Kristiansand..Wonderful coast cities. Kristiansand also have a great Zoo to visit..best in Norway.

the lofotic islands are great.
the fjords are awesome.
If you don't have a lot of time, hire a car in Oslo and make a tour along the entire southcoast all the way to Bergen. Then even further up along the scenic Atlantic coast route. Try to get to Trondheim and maybe a car drop off over here.
hiking possibilities are abundant througout the country.

You can look for some travel agencies itineraries. I visited Jotunheimen and Hardangervidda plateau both for couple of days on bike and on feet, both mountains are beautiful. I was there in august 2006, weather was sunny with some clouds, only few days with some short thunderstorms. Temperatures were comfortable, not very hot, not too cold.
But there are plenty of nice places in Norway I hope I'll visit this country at least two more times (Lofoten islands, some other fjords)

Tromso is a nice Arctic town; even further is Nord Kapp (North Cape); the towns of Kautokeino and Karasjok (both in Finnmark I believe) are small and interesting centers of the indigenous saami population...

As others have said, Bergen is great. Don't just hang out in Oslo, head to the west coast along the Atlantic...you won't regret it!

The Bergen Line
This line connects the two most important cities in Norway, Oslo and Bergen, and the train journey "over the roof of Norway" is and experience in a class of its own.
Also a must see is Frogner Park, which is an outdoor sculpture park! Just beautiful!

I second Ola. Summer time, or around May. Norway was beautiful when I went (Oct), but it was rainy all but one day. I'm told that around May, the Hardanger Fjord is particularly breathtaking because there are hundreds of thousands of blooming apple trees along the fjord.
I also went on the Hutrigruten - Tromso to Bergen stretch. I flew into Tromso (something like $130 USD from Oslo) and then went down along the coast. Along the way back, the train from Bergen to Oslo is supposed to be one of the must-see sights in the region. I sadly did this ride at night :(
As far as fjords go, I hear the Geirangerfjord is supposed to be spectacular.

I can recommend a trip with "Hurtigruten" from Bergen to Trondheim. Fly to Oslo, take the train to Bergen and switch to the ship. Fly home from Trondheim. At least this is what I did.

I'd suggest going to Bergen and then moving north. But better choose summer time to go there:)
