First point is that as far as I know snowmobiling is not alowed in switzerland(yess I'am swiss so I should know) It's only used by Slopeservicepeople and "paramedics". there are a few places where you can go on guided tours wwith snowmobiles but they're really expensive as far as I know.(If you want to know more about it you have to google it). If you dont need too much comfort you can go to a youth hostel or you can find places like "Naturfreundenhaus" or some other rather cheap accomodations(cheap means around 20 to 40 Swiss Franks). Youthhostels in Switzerland are really clean and nice places. Awesome places are Grindelwald or if you prefer the old swiss chalet style you should check out Mürren. Also Interlaken is a pretty good base to go skiing but basing Interlaken you allways have to take the train or car.

One great smaller ski area is Flumserberg, a bit more than an hour min east of Zürich via train or car. You can take the train (the S2, for example) from Zürich main station non-stop to Unterterzen which stops directly at the gondola station below Flumserberg--about 15 min gondola up into the ski area. Plus, the SBB (swiss railways) has an offer for roundtrip to Flumserberg including lift ticket for 86.80 CHF (with halbtax card 69.40 CHF). You can add an extra day skiing for 41.80 CHF more. Flumserberg has very good skiing and also some good apres-ski possibilities as well. Of course, as everyone has said, nothing is really cheap in Switzerland, but you get good quality for your money in Flumserberg without having to travel far from the city. And don't forget to try a "schumli flumli" at Chrüz Alphüttli and Schneebar!

I would recomend Interlaken as well. It's not the most beautyful place as it is really touristic but it's a central place and easy to move. From there it takes you only 30 Minutes to go to Thun (other side of the lake) what is a lovely non touristic town with a castel and a nice old part. There is also the chance to go up to many mountains or to a cave close to the lake (Beatushoehlen), to thermal bath just by the lakeside (place called Hotel Beauts in Merligen) Another option (in the same region but in another vally) to ski and to stay but with a bit less flexibility of moving and interesting sights is Adelboden-Lenk. Close to Lenk are beautiful waterfalls and one time in winter they have a husky-race if there is enough snow. The accomodations might be the same prize more or less. Check also the prize for skiing and if in the ticket the train or bus (transportation to the skiressort) is included. About snow mobile I can't give you any advise as I've never really seen a place where you officialy can do it but you can check on the touristwebpage of Switzerland. Another thing to make your stay a little cheaper is getting your own food in a Supermarket or local shop....eating in restaurants is pretty expensive. If you stay longer than 2-3 weeks and if you need to use often local transportation then you can ask on the ticketboot of the trainstation for a 1/2-prize card. This will cost you 100 sFr for one month or 150 sFr for one year. After that all the transport will cost you the half (what is still quite expensive :-)). Hope you'll enjoy your stay!

Sas Fe is a good place in Switzerland. If you want the same beauty and atmosphere for less money, I suggest going to Austria. We skied in Seefeld...near Innsbruck by train and well worth the trip!

Lenzerheide is great. And they have a superb youth hostel. I don't know the name of it, but it's great, a friend of mine has been there. And from there you can ski and do all sorts of wintersport in Lenzerheide/Valbella, Flims, Laax and all around Chur. Enjoy our nice country. But as the first gal said - Switzerland isn't cheap... :o/

I agree with Sybille about Interlaken. Another place worthy because of the quality of its pistes, the location and the lndscapes. But it's true, nothing i cheap in Switzerland!!

Well first Marina is right, there's nothing really cheap here in switzerland. But a good place to go is INterlaken, it's close to almost everything (1 hour for big cities, 1/2 hour to go the mountains, you've 2 lakes and a good hostels with a lot of people from around the world.) But we've a lot of tourists there, it's really famous. Other place to go is Zermatt, but trust me it's quite more expensive than Interlaken, but great Ski resort with everything what you need in the wintertime. (I worked there 1 year)

Well it depends on where your base will be. The cheapest accomodation you can get is the youth hostel (they're normally good) and they're all over Switzerland (http://www.youthhostel.ch/home.html?&L=1). You should visit Zurich, Bern and Geneve if you're interested in sightseeing (if you don't wanna go skiing anymore of course).

I like Elm in Glarus. Its a nice small village and not too touristy. But the skiing-area is also small. Other good places are Wallis (for exempel Fiesch) or Engadin in Graubünden. And, cheap is nothing in switzeland =)
