Most of the island is good for history and architecture! Valletta, Mdina and Rabat have some beautiful buildings. There are churches everywhere. If you're after ancient history, then the ruins at Hagar Qim and the Hypogeum in Paola are great. There's loads of good restaurants all around the St Julians/Sliema/Paceville area. If you like Chinese then I'd recommend The Spoon at Portomaso Marina - bit expensive but excellent food!

Gozo is definitely worth a trip. It's easy to get up to the ferry, then see the citadel at Victoria (Rabat). It's like Mdina without the crowds, and the cathedral is gorgeous and you can see the knights' coats of arms on the floor.

Head to the north east and visit Golden Bay; a sandy beached bay with blue water. Might be crowded so go early and take your time. Either go by bus (easily accessible but not frequent) or rent a car. Also, I'd recommend the Hagar Qim Ruins and Valletta. Go off the beaten track and see a lot more. Shops in Valetta aren't that interesting to me by the way.

Go to Spinola bay in st. julians. It is really pretty when the sun is shining and there's a lot of resturants in the area. st. julians is the tourist centrum, so for history and architecture I would visit Valletta or Mdina

Malta is a boring island. 3 days are enough - Valetta is nice but Mdina is nothing special. Just a old town. And indeed to find a good place to eat, or even to stay you must be very carefull. I would not recommend Malta for a long stay. Gozo is nice to see - you can do it in one day.

Definately visit St.Johns cathedral - its breathtaking (make sure to dress approproately) Also, the Knights of Mdina - there is an actual knight from a line of knights that gives tours of the house/museum and has so much information from his family over the centuries!

Valletta is amazing for Knights of St John history. Hagar Qim is great. You can hire a taxi and driver for around 80 Euros a day. See if you can get to Comino. There isnt much there, except an impressive chateau on top of the hill and a great little beach. You can hire a water taxi for 20Euros to take you there and then on to Gozo.
