Bangkok Questions

Question asked in : Bangkok - 4 years ago

My hubby and I have been planning a trip to Thailand for almost 2yrs. But now there's all the protesting and rioting going on in Bangkok. Does anyone know if thats going on throughout the country, or mainly just in Bangkok? I've found a flight directly into Phuket without having to stop in Bangkok, do you think it'd be okay to travel to Thailand if I stay away from Bangkok?

Don't worry. I was there last week and things have settled down even in Bangkok. Tourist areas like Phuket, Chiang Mai, etc... are safe as they usually are in case of political unrest in the country.

Hi, I think you will definately be safe flying direct to phuket. Most rioting is isolated to bangkok and parts of northern thailand. Although I was in bangkok Nov/Dec last year when they closed the airport due to rioting and I saw absolutely no signs of trouble at all!

Today the government lifted the state of emergency in Bangkok, there have been "bussiness as usual" since last week, I live in Bangkok about 6-8 km from the city center and we hardly feel it, the impact is felt because of trafficjam... And that shops closed for 2 days during songkran last week...

I've been to Thailand many times over the years. Military coups and regime changes are quite common and are usually peaceful. The demonstrations are confined to the most part around the government house in Bangkok. The main tourist ghetto, on Sukhumvit road, is away from all this, so even if you visit Bangkok, you will probably not know anything is going on other than what you read in the papers. I was in Bangkok last October just before the airport takeover. Demonstrations were going on then in Bangkok. I never saw any sign of it. The cause of all this is an ex prime minister who was overthrown by the military a couple of years ago (Thaksin). He is a corrupt billionaire who cannot go back to his country without being thrown in jail. So his solution is to destabilize the government from afar. He is the one financing and mobilizing the red shirts. Phuket is several hundred miles away and is untouched by this. So are other tourist destinations like Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. You and your hubby should be fine. Enjoy Thailand! It's a great place.

hey, you should not worry about traveling to thailand. the rioting happened only in BKK but it should be over by now. Believe me there are so many nice places in thailand to visit. go up to the north, C hiang mai, there are very very nice people , food and lots to do.

Hi I've just got back from Bangkok as well and unfortunately I've seen a riot as well. However, it's a beatiful city and it's not worth missing. When you see trouble, a group of people in one place shouting or anything...just leave, don't go check what's going on, just keep moving and that's it. ...aa and don't wear any yellow or red tops because those are the colours of their political parties

Hi I just got back from Thailand a week ago. I was in Bangkok alone during the rioting time (not through choice) and I think it would be fine to fly there, but then perhaps just get a connecting internal flight to somewhere like Phucket or Chiang Mai. I have been living in Chiang Rai and would very highly recommend there and Chiang Mai! Good luck

Don't worry about the riots and stuff, they don't last long, and it's becoming more and more natural. You should try areas outside of Bangkok in case, but really, you could blend in as one of the tourists already living there. Check out places like Koh Chang, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phuket, Huahin, and Pattaya.

as usual, the media makes the situation looks worse than it really is. don't worry, the protesters unlikely to touch any innocents.

The riots this time round are intended only and only to disrupt government activities. The organizers of the riots are pretty determined to avoid any immediate ripple effects on the activities and business of ordinary folk especially tourism. The riots in Bangkok are concentrated around government house with no untoward effect on the rest of BKK. As I write the riots have ended albeit temporarily, in the face of military intervention. My bet is that the riots will commence again in the future, when.. is anybody's guess. However, Phuket is literally a million miles away from all these issues. Even if one has full blown riots Phuket and the south of Thailand will be unaffected. Flights and airports will function as per normal in these areas. 2 years of planning, heck..go for it. you guys will not have any issues.

Bangkok is huge so it will be easy for you to avoid the riots. Phuket is a world away from Bangkok so you shouldn't worry. Have fun! And this is way off topic but...contrary to what it may look like street food is delicious! Don't be afraid to try it.

Hi there, I was in Thailand recently and have been avidly following the news reports. I have not seen anything about trouble outside of the city. I think Phuket will be fine.

To be honest I would be a little bit cautious at the moment. It rather looks like it's been getting worse for a few months now and I know there's currently talk of the possibility of a coup which would possibly unsettle the country quite a bit. If I were you I would email your embassy in Thailand and ask for their advice (obviously taking it with a grain of salt as they are obliged to play it on the safe side). If you do decide to go check your travel insurance closely and make sure they will cover travel to a country your government may specifically warn against and that if things do go badly that they will cover the costs of airlifting you out!

If you have found a flight into Phuket go with that if you feel safer. Though I don't think you would have much of a problem flying into and visiting Bangkok. It's a huge city and riots are usually pretty isolated. I've been two blocks away from riots in South America and you wouldn't even know it was going on except for the smoke and smell of fire.

I say just go for it...and have fun....stay away from Bangkok to be safe....or head into Bangkok and just stay away from certain areas. I've been in numerous countries when similar issues were going on. The best part? Less tourists!
