Go to Syntagma Square and view the subway station which shows the layers of civilization that were excavated to build the station. Then wander the old section off the square at suppertime. The wooden tables are placed in the streets and the moussaka is to die for! You can see the Acropolis lit up after dark from most of the streets.

Nice town where I have already been 3 times. If you wish to enjoy the view from the Acropolis down I would suggest go there early cause in the afternoon the heat might be too much in summer and in winter you can get rainshowers which come suddenly but fierce. I would most certainly recommend a trip to Aegina island which is closest of all islands to Athens and where food and drinks are much cheaper.

There are some must see places steeped in history, too many to name, some of which will literally stand out on top of a hill in front of you. There are some great market shops and jewelers. As for night life there only a few clubs but many bars as the Greeks are very sociable people they like to sit around and talk over their weekend drinks. Athens is heavily military policed and it is obvious they have many problems with immigration, however don't let this put you off of walking alone etc as it is quite a safe city. Finally, the tram system is quite unreliable as they always seem to get detached from the overhead cables.
