Sihanoukville-- awesome laidback beach area. You might also want to check out the capital, Phnom Pehn. Lots of historical stuff on the killing fields

if you really wanna have a beautiful, peaceful place, go to one of the islands, book it in Sihanoukville and take the boat from there. I was in Ko Rung at the Paradise Beach Bungalows, they only had 4 bungalows, but were building some more.

If you want to go off for peace and quiet go to Mondulukiri or Ratanakiri. The former one is hard to reach and not much touristic attractions but landscape and people, but a great place. I stayed there for two weeks ;-) Ratanakiri is phantastic, too, but I think it recently got more and more visitors due to the opening of the Lao border.

Phnom Penh is very nice! Lots of history about the war etc. The coast is really nice as well. I went to Sihanoukville, which is not as beautiful as for example Thailand, but it was really nice.

Phnom Penh is great for recent history. There's also a lovely bed and breakfast place opposite the old detention camp/prison (which is now an interesting museum)
