Hy, do you just want to visit the cities? The most beautiful thing in Switzerland are the mountains! So if you have time go to Saas Fee, the region of "Graubünden" or Interlaken. I'am sure you would not regret it!

hey, bern is more central than zurich or basel or geneva. from bern you have excellent connections to anywhere in switzerland. you can get a train to milan too. bern is an amazing town and more laid back then zurich or geneva. basel is great as well, there is a direct train from basel to milan, see www.sbb.ch or www.myswitzerland.com. have fun and enjoy our beautiful country!!

I haven't been to Basel or Zurich, so I am basing this solely on my friends' comments to me and my experience in Geneva. When I went to visit my friends, I absolutely loved it. I must say, adding to some of the things that have already been mentioned, their public transportation is phenomenal! Public transportation is so reliable that if a bus is even a minute late, the locals are out looking for it. I thought Geneva was a great place and there was so much to see. The entire area was gorgeous and I know my friend and I spent quite a bit of time just exploring the area. The people were also really welcoming.

Convnience wise, I would say Zurich, but I found it rewarding to not have an exact base and simply follow the train lines around Switzerland. Definately visit Berne.

Zurich is such a beautiful place! The lake is amazing, especially in summer. The Banhoffstrasse is the paradise for shopping. And if you want to take off for a couple of days, you can go to the mountains near the city.

the nicest cities are bern and lucerne, and you'll probably have the cheapest accomodation in the italian part. visit bellinzona, lugano and/or locarno on the way to milan (in fact, milan is probably not worth a visit, depending on what you're interested in!!)!!

every of this cities has more and less nice parts... i could imagine, that for a tourist geneva is the best city, but as i said, there are nice spots in basel and geneva as well!! there are direct trains from zurich mainstation to milan... you could just check the swiss train homepage, sbb.ch, there you can see prices and the timetables!!

Better city to live is Zurich, but also more expensive! However, it is easier to travel to Milano by train from there

I fully agree with David Z. Berne is the most convenient base, if you've not decided where to go yet. Also, it'll shorten your trip to Milano. Fränzi K.'s also got a point, don't just stick to the cities! Also make sure to visit the smaller towns on the lakes (e.g. Biel/Bienne, Thun, Interlaken, Neuchatel) which are within 1 hour by train from Berne.

you could start in basel and then travel your way down through zurich and finally end in geneve?

Basel is cool, it's right at the border to Germany and France, it has some amazing museums, it's great to hang out downtown, it's not huge but nit small either so you get to see a lot without getting lost...is there more I should say?

well since our puplictransportsystem is pretty good, you could actually just pic one of them, and still get your train with out any problems. If you are more a Cultural Tourist I would recommend Basel or Geneva since these Cities are known for there Museums and other cultural activities. If your just up for Partying, it would definitly be Zürich.

depends on what you want to see in switzerland. to get the train to milan I guess zurich is the best location. zurich is famous for it`s nightlife. but the other tow citys are more beautiful.
