I agree, hitchhiking is the best way to travel around Scotland, you can meet lot's of interesting and kind people. I got a job in Scotland in Highlands and stayed there for 8 months, I was hiking almost every day and going somewhere farer every two weeks. Ballachulish/Glencoe is excellent place to live and I've never wait longer than 5 minutes to catch a lift.

I traveled scotland for 2 month by foot (about 850 Km.) and a few more kilometers by hitchhiking, train and bus. i would really recomend to explore scottland like that because there are so much beautiful remote places which are nearly only reachable by foot. if you decide to travel by foot always inform yourself about bothies...littlte houses where you can stay for free...no wather or toilet (normaly) but a roof above your head. ask lokals about it

Ediburgh is a beautiful, medieval city, with plenty to do. If you are a whiskey connoiseur then you must check out the breweries in the Highlands. Orkney is spectacular in summer or winter; if you go make sure to check out Maes Howe. Take a bus tour (or road trip) through the highlands (again, spectaular in Winter or Summer). And Stirling for the battle of Scottish Freedom (Braveheart).
