It depends on your budget and where you're staying. Water taxi is great if you can afford the €100 or so they charge. However, keep in mind that even if you choose the water taxi, most hotels do not have their own piers, so you're going to have to walk a little any way, and even if you can see your hotel from your drop off point, if you're not famimiar with Venice geography, there's still a chance you'll get turned around.
The cheapest option is taking the bus to piazzale Roma. €2. From there you can probably walk to your hotel if it's Cannereggio or Santa Croce. (I'm happy to walk even further, but remember you'll be carrying your bags up and over bridges and steps). From there you can also cross over and take a vaparetto to your closest stop (€6 one way, or consider a pass, with or without museums, if you're going to be using them a lot during your stay). All passes can be bought at the airport or at the tourist office in the train station (over the modern bridge from piazzale Roma.
I however always choose Alilaguna. I buy a ticket for the boat to my closest stop (usually Rialto) for €13 at the window right outside of arrivals at the airport (€25 if you're going straight to San Marco) then I walk a few minutes to the pier. The Alilaguna follows the same path to Venice that the water taxi takes, so you have the same great view. It takes marginally longer than a taxi because of stops, and won't drop you at the door (but as I said, in but a very few cases, neither will water taxis). But it is rarely crowded, and is in my opinion the best way to get into Venice: easy, comfortable, afforadable and pittoresque.

If you are getting from the airport without breaking the bank, take a bus - they regularly leave from the airport to go to Venice. Again, if you don't want to break the bank, stay in Mestre near the train station instead of in Venice proper. From Mestre you can easily get public transport to the nearest vaporetto station.

Depending on where you stay, you might want to take a bus and then a water taxi. It was really easy when I did it and it was much cheaper than just taking the water taxi. My friend and I stayed in one of the Best Western hotels near the Piazza San Marco (the Best Western Hotel Montecarlo) because it was pretty cheap and really nice.

About hotels: what are you looking for? Budget, luxury, or something in between?

Got to take the water taxi, as it tends to be the cheapest option to get from the airport to the area that your hotel is situated in

It's better if you take the train from Rome or any other city in Italy. And take it to the station on Vencie (not Mestre, which is main land). Then you can take a Vaporetto (water taxi) anywhere close to your hotel. Water taxis from the airport are expensie (95-100 euros)

It depends if the hotel is on the mainland or on the actual island. If the hotel is on mainland, take a bus. If the hotel is on the island, it's easier to take the water taxi, though a bit expensive.

If you fly into Marco Polo and plan to go to Venice then I would recommend taking a bus there... public transportation is usually pretty reasonable. When you land go through the double doors from baggage claim to exit terminal and take a left.. there are some counters there to arrange transportation.
Once your in the city... the easiest way to get around IMO is the Water Taxi.. it's a bit expensive through.. not like in Rome where you can buy all day passes...
I would recommend walking unless you are in a hurry or are going to Murano or Lido or the other surrounding islands..

Just take the watertaxi, it's not the cheapest way but for sure the best way, it's a unique expoirience, if not take the bus and then the vaporetto

I recommend the Pensione Accademia in Venice. This is a beautiful hotel inside and out, on the Grand Canal (mind the smell). If you're into trivia, this is the hotel Katherine Hepburn stayed in while filming "Summertime". My only warning (goes for all of Venice) is: bring mosquito spray.
