The tri-cities of Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia are lovely. Krakow is awesome too, don't miss the Wieliczka Salt Mine on the outskirts. If you're going in winter, try going to Zakopane - it is a beautiful, dreamy little town in the Tatra mountains - perfect for skiing and hiking.

I'm afraid I have only been to Krakow so far. I have a friend from Krakow who could tell me all the little and local stories and supersticious theories the locals believe! Perhaps if you go there, get a guide or someone with the knowledge as it makes the city even more interesting!
I can share you two already:
The two towers on the main square are different in length...
This is because two brothers were building the towers. Along the way it became a game who could build the highest tower. The younger brother went faster, and the older couldn't stand it, so killed his younger brother, and finished both towers but build his a little higher. If you look at the towers, they are different in structure near the top.
A second thing which caught me strong, and made me shiver:
Each hour, a guy went up in the tower to play his trumpet just before the bells would call an hour. During the 2nd world war, Someone shot the guy during his trumpet play. Until today they still play the song before the hour, but they stop playing at the moment that the guy in the war got killed, so the play stops very abrubt. Listen to it while you are there and think about what happened in the WW2.

Cities you have to vistit in Poland - Warsaw, Poznań, Kraków, Łódź and in my opinion the best city - Gdańsk. The most stunning old town I've ever seen. An also at the summertime there is a lot of interesting festivals in Poland.

Definitely visit Wroclaw. The town is small enough to get around on foot and offers many sights. My favorites were the main square, the salt island (if I remember correctly), and trying to find all of the gnome statues that are peppered throughout the city. I was only able to find 8 of them but it was fun looking.

I recently was in Poland and had the opportunity to go to Auschwitz. It was an indescribable experience, walking through the exhibits in the barracks. To actually walk those streets was at the very least a somber experience.

If you're interested by visiting not biggest cities but also beautiful and amazing you should visit Kozłówka, and it's Palace. It's "Versailles Palace-looking like" mansion decorated fully with original stuff which belonged to the Zamoyski family.

visit gdansk, wrocław, zakopane and zamość - these are great places to visit without feeling like just another foreign tourist, although you may find yourself among polish holidaymakers. most people in these places speak english and are friendly to foreigners. in other places like krakow it's either too touristy or people are still unable to behave in a neighbourly way to each other, let alone to foreign tourists. in many places, whenever foreigners appeared, it was historically a sign of an invasion and meant that people should go into hiding.
