Got to Seoul! Seoul Tower, Panmunjon (through the USO, cheapest and open to everyone), COEX theatre, Myongdong area, any palace, Building 63. Depends on how much time you have but all of those are cheap and easy to do day trips.

Gwangju, the east coast. gyeongju has all the history. In Seoul go to Hyewha, Hondae, Insa Dong. Just south of Seoul is Ichon which is nice. There are awesome hiking areas like Seoraksan and Hallasan that are well spread out in the country.

Depends what you want to do. There are some great ski hills around Seoul or River Rafting in Kangwon-do. If you like to party I suggest Hongdae. Cultural experience is best had in Andong and Gyeongju. Or for a fun festival go to the Boryeong Mud Festival or to the Pusan International Film Festival in September.

Seoul, can go to Gyong-Bok Palace for historical sight seeing. Seoul Tower is good too. For shopping, Myuoung-dong is good at night shopping. For bargain shopping, go to Namdaemum or Dongdaemum.

There are many things to do and see and in addition to all the places listed by other people I would advise checking for festivals during your visit. I live here and I use this website : http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/festival/eng/korea_festival.html to find when things are happening and where. So far I've been to the Mud Festival, Snow Crab Festival, Buddha's Birthday, and the Bull Fighting and had a great time at each one. Lots of shopping and good food avaliable as well aa chance to meet people.

If you're in the country during July - the Mud Festival at Boryeong is well worth a look. Lots of foreigners drinking and hanging out on a beach, lots of mud to mess around in, and plenty of cultural exhibits as well.

Ski resorts in South Korea are amazing. And if shopping and sight seeing is what you like, you can visit Myuong-dong in Seoul. For bargain shopper, go to Dongdaemun or Namdaemon.

Just in case you like amusement parks with rides like rollercoasters, there is a place in Yongin that is about 30 miles south of Seoul just off the K1 highway!

If you like to walk (good shoes) you can visit the Hwaseong Fortress, stay until the begin of the evening to see the wall enlighted ... It's in Suwon, if you come from Seoul it's easy to take the subway/train to go there +/- 45min. If you want to do some shopping, you can go to Insa-Dong to buy some artisanal souvenirs. You can also visit the Tower of Seoul, with a panorama of Seoul, the highest point of the city. Near the tower, there is a folk village. And a lot of things to visit, to drink, to eat, to buy, to have funny times ! ...

I enjoyed the trip to Panmunjom for history-factor rather than pure fun-factor. I suspect Seoul is the best all-around. Toko-ri is seedy but has some wild nudey bars if you're into that kind of thing.
