Reina Sofía Modern Art Museum, Thyssen Museum, Prado - Europe's greatest museums. go to Caixa Forum if u have time, sometimes u can find very interesting temporary expositions there.... open caffes on Calle de Alcalá - mmmm.... good coffee and sweets, and don't forget Latina District, great architecture at daytime and great bars at night with Rioja, Sangria and Jamon... oh, I love Madrid :)

The Prado is a big attraction, which I think is free on Wensday if I recall. I only enjoyed one piece really. In comparison to other museums, its not that big of a deal. There is the palace and the cathedral which are very impressive; but there are churches far better in other parts of spain and europe.
I say all this to let you know that the sex district is the best place to go. Not for sex (I wouldn't know) but for the shopping. You can get some unique things there that you won't find anywhere else.
And go to Museo de Jamon and get the Saint Jacob. Its two filet of pork with cheese, breaded and friend. Or get the tortilla de espana. Delicious!

everything what was mentioned above + the cathedral (just next to palacio real), el rastro (street market) on sunday morning, nice view from parque del cerro de tio pio (or more common called parque de siete tetas), plaza españa, templo de debod, caja encendida (as above mentioned la caixa forum, but this one belongs to other bank..). if you have more time also nice half day trip can be laguna de peñalara northern from madrid or if the case you are into theme parks - there s a warner park...and for the night: la latina, chueca, calle de las huertas, anywhere around sol or if you are willing to pay 20euros for entrance (or if you meet some PR guy 15euros including 2 drinks) there s a 7 floor club called kapital worth seeing...or cheaper way of having fun - botellon (street drinking) in ciudad universitaria or in park by templo de debod ;-)

Madrid is awesome and there are lots of places to visit, eat and enjoy. Been there so many times, it's hard to choose what to visit and what not to visit! My guess is, try to see all of Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum, Thyssen Museum. Take a walk from Plaza de Colon to the Gran Via to Plaza Mayor to Puertas del Sol! it's a 3 to 4 kms walk but amazing. Have a Paella in puertas del sol and a spanish ham sandwich! Don't forget to visit the Parque del Retiro, it's their central park! Atocha train station is not that good... i would rent a car and visit the mountains nearby! Theres a mountain called Navacerrada, like 30 kms away, and it's 3000 meters high! very nice! snow all year around and its so peaceful there... i recommend it! In Madrid watch your wallet all the time! Enjoy!
