You can go to all the usual touristy places and snap some photos. A great way to get a feel of modern China is to visit the business district (chaoyang). Marvel at the architecture. Go visit migrant communities and talk to the people, then compare the experiences. Don't forget to try the street food. If you hang around the vendors long enough, you just might get to witness a raid.

Definitely visit the historical sites (Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace), then if you have more time, go to Nanluoguxiang, Hou Hai, and Wangfujing for drinking, eating and shopping. If you want to go out to clubs, go to Workers' Stadium in Chaoyang as there. If you want to see contemporary Chinese art exhibitions go to 798 factory. One of my favorite activity is to rent a bicycle and ride across Tiananmen Square, especially when the take down the flag.

There's a lot to do in Beijing!! I think the must see's are: the great wall, the forbidden city, the summer palace, the olympic stadium... Don't forget to try Beijing Duck at the restaurant, delicious!! If you're with friends, go to the KTV. You rent your own private Karaokee room for a few hous. You can also order food and drinks and have a great time!!
